I swapped the highport cams into my lowport engine yesturday.
The car is performing very smoothly when driving, however when in gear and at rest/creeping forward and backward, the car is a bit jumpy. I don't even have to give the car gas (it's an auto), just letting the tranny bring it forward in drive and the car feels like it's pulsing, kinda lightly grabing and releasing. When the car is not moving, it's still a bit jumpy, but not as bad as creeping.
A little background : Last night shortly after taking the car on the toad after the swap, the CEL came on, but corrected itself w/in 10 min. The car was idling a bit low, but we raised it a bit. Oh ya, timing was set to 17... however, I don't think that has anything to do with this considering I've advancing timing ** and not experienced this.
Has anyone else had this?

Did you find out what the code was from the CEL? I noticed some idle divebomb issues right after my intake cam swap but they went away within a week. I didn't have any surging or bucking problems though.

Pls post what you find. I'm swapping the Highport cam into my '98 in a week or two and I'd like to know. I heard someone else say they had to pull a highport cam out for the same issue, they never resolved it.

I sure will. Hopefully he'll be available so time this week. I really don't want to bust open the engine again, but it's better then not finding the prob! *fingers-crossed*

I just installed a 91intake cam on my 99 and it idles exactly the same as ** the swap.
A little annoyed by my new pulsating engine, I popped the hood and I thought I should say what I found. The whole engine bay is jerking. Literally all the hoses, engine and caps are moving with the engine with each jerk. It's pretty stong!
SO the pulsing/rough idle that I'm feeling is acutally when the car is at rest (stopped) is me feeling the jerk of the acutal engine. You can see it very easily.
I guessing I'm stuck with the klunky engine with these new hp cams?
It shouldn't be like that. I'd set base idle, reset ECU, timing, and check the TPS voltage. If it still does it, something must of went wrong with your cam install I guess.
I believe there were 6 codes thrown & saved...
1) #4 cylinder misfire
2) Faulty O2 sensor
3) Low compression in #4 cylinder
4) Possible faulty EGR
5) Leaking or faulty #4 injector
6) I can't remember... chucky will fill in the rest & correct my mistakes.
We had a problem with that cylinder when we did the cam swap so I believe most of the codes are related to that rather than directly indicative of a problem with, say, the injector or the oxygen sensor. The CEL went away shortly after the install and we only have the rough idle now.
Ya, so the dude at Nissan did a free code check and reset for me sweeeet!
Just to add to Raene's post (very close Ian!),
cylinder 4 misfire:
Probs associated with this code =
-improper spark plug
-insufficient compression
-ERG valve
-injector shorted or leaking
-intake air leak
-front O2 sensor
I just picked up new spark plugs, hope to put them in tomorrow and bring the timing back to stock see if this changes anything..
Well, we installed NGK BKR6E-11 plugs gapped 0.040", removed + cleaned the AAC assembly, and set the idle with the TPS disconnected to 800rpm, then set the timing to 15 deg BTDC (down from 17 deg)...
I'm not sure what else to try. I'd say bring it into Nissan, but I don't want to cough up $100 for them to loosen my throttle cable again
That WAS rather amusing though
I'm wondering if it's a problem with the way the IAT sensor was relocated after we installed your RActive filter...? It's over by the fenderwell now.
I'm thinking since the ECU richens the mixture during cold-start, and the % of fuel injected is a function of intake air temperature, and since this only happens when a) the engine is cold and b) the outside air is cold.... I'm thinking the ECU is seeing the intake air temps as being so cold it's injecting a ton of fuel and the car is sputtering and dying out when it sees load (when you put it into gear).
So I want you to try something the next time you start your car when it's a) cold engine, b) cold outside. First, pop your hood and find your IAT sensor (the one that's hanging). Next, cuddle it... I mean, put it in your hand and warm it up. Hold onto it until the probe part of it is about as warm as your hand. Next, hop in your car FAST and start it up. Test the car to see if it stalls as easily. If it doesn't... we know what the problem is!
The car has had this problem since Feb. We didn't install the short ram till June or so. It's only getting worse now b/c the temp outside has dropped considerably the last few days.
EDIT: Ian, In think you replied in the wrong thread. This one is about the idle prob after the cams.. You're talking about the stalling right? (aac valve)

Rargh.
I have another idea, I'll talk to you about it later
you know i have the same problem. I can't remember if it started after installing the highport cam in my lowport but when creeping in traffic, the car will start bucking really bad and I'll have to clutch in.
I know I have a light misfire at idle but I have no CEL (except 0304, knock sensor). I replaced my plugs, wires and disty cap & rotor and I still have the misfire and the bucking.
Other than that I don't have any problems.
kinda curious if you guys figure out your problem...
