SE-R hard to start

It's a 1993 Sentra SE-R automatic.
My gf couldn't start it this afternoon.
I tried it and failed. I hear it cracked but nothing happened. Seems like no gas to it or something like that.
Then, while cracking it, I step on gas and it started?
Is this normal or a sign of something is going bad?

thanks

When you mean cracking, do you mean, cranking? Does it do that all the time, or does it do it only when its hot/cold? If its not starting right, it does mean something needs fixing, but you need to provide more details.

If you stepped on the gas and it started, that could mean its not getting gas. It could be due to a clogged fuel filter, bad fuel pump or clogged fuel line. Can't tell you for sure until you add more details.

I wish I can provide more details.
It definitly feels like it's not getting fuel. I was thinking fuel pump, fuel filter, fuel line, or something alone that line.
So, what's the best way to find out which one is the faulty part?

thanks

The 91-93 Classics had a fuel pump problem. Nissan sent out a TSB (technical service bulletin) on it. Check under your hood and under your back seat on the fuel pump cover plate, there should be a sticker stating your vehicle was serviced under the fuel pump TSB. If not, don't condemn the pump yet. Check your ignition components, then replace your fuel fliter. After you've ruled out all other variables, go to a junkyard and get a 95+ fuel pump. Then go to your local Nissan dealer and get a fuel pump O-ring. Replace your fuel pump. While your at it, give your car a tune up. Clean your battery terminals and grounds, too. Preventitive maintenance.

You could replace each one by one, starting from the cheapest, which would be the fuel filter. See if that helps. How long ago was it changed?

thanks guys. Helpful info.
I don't know when was the fuel filter change, if it ever changed. My gf got it a few months back.
We just put a new used engine in about couple months back.
It happened only once. I guess I'll take a look at the fuel filter and see if it looks really old. If it is, I guess I'll change it and see if it helps.

thanks
