so....9 hours before i plan on leaving for the 600 mile trip to the convention, my tranny fu*ks me. under normal driving conditions leaving work today, the car is in the Drive (D) position.....it just doesn't go like normal. i soon realise that it won't shift up either. the car is basically STUCK IN SECOND GEAR!!
i don't know much about auto trannies, so someone PLEASE help me.
i changed my fuel filter at work, so i'm gonna go look for any harnesses or connectors that might have gotten fuel on them.....
When was the last time you changed the filter and fluid in the trans? How many miles on it? Did you happen to bump the throttle kickdown wire that connects to the throttle body?
holy crap i was freaking out. it fixed itself somehow. i had changed the fuel filter this afternoon. there must have been a drop or so of fuel on a ground or tranny harness connector. i had unplugeed a couple, shook them out, and checked to see if they smelles like gas. let it sit to come inside and post online and talk to people about it.....and when i went back out to test drive....it was shifting fine! thank GOD! sorry for the frantic post people.....
You probably just knocked something loose when changing the filter. The connectors on the Nissan are pretty water tight, so I don't think gas could get in them. You probably fixed it by unconnecting and reconnecting some connector. Glad to hear you found it
It has a name and is supposed to do it for some reason(probably just from being too hard on it). It resests itself when you turn the ignition off and back on. Mine usually did it after a smokey burnout. I would launch the car and be like wtf. I could then turn the car off and back on and it would be fine again. I can't remember what the technical name for it was, but it's normal.

Are you talking about "limp mode"? I didn't even realize that Nissan had that program in the ECM. I know of quite a few other manufacturers (mostly German), that have that mode programmed in the ECM.
yes in most auto trannies, when a value from say for instance a tranny temp sensor gets a wrong reading, it will try to save the tranny by placing in a sort of safe mode, to try to save the transmission, either you unplugged something or maybe your tcs is starting to go bad, did you get a cel?

When the fail-safe operation occurs, the next time the key is turned to the "on" position, the POWER indicator light wil blink for approximately eight seconds after coming on for two seconds. While the vehicle can be driven under these circumstances, please note that the gears in the automatic transmission will be locked in third gear.
If the vehicle is driven under extreme conditions, such as excessive wheel spinning and subsequent hard braking, the Fail-safe system may be activated. This will occur even if all electrical circuits are functioning properly. In this case, turn the ignition key "OFF" and wait for 3 seconds. Then turn the key back to the "ON" postion. The vehicle should return to it's normal operating condition. If it does not return to it's normal operating condition have your NISSAN dealer check the transmission and repair if necessary.
