I have been sitting on an air ratio gauge for a very long time. I decided not to put it on because a mechanic warned me that using it may make the o2 sensor malfunction. He said that it will alter the voltage back to the ECU and the air ratio will then be misread.
Connecting just the gauge to the O2 sensor shouldn't cause any problems, it may but the likelyhood is small. Most people experience problems when they try and connect multiple things to the O2 sensor (A/F gauge, turbo timer).
With all of those things drawing current from the O2 sensor by the time the voltage reading gets to the ECU it is not the correct voltage. This will throw your A/F off as the ECU will try and change the A/F ratio based on the voltage it is seeing.
