Someone please explain all the "blown" sr20 engines!
I've asked about it before and was told lack of maintenance. Keep in mind I'm 32 and was a se-r old school fan back in 92 or so. Now I'm noticing all over this board "blown engine" and I'm wondering if there's an inherent flaw or is it just they're fricking 12 plus years old now. I know with certain fords, headgaskets leak internally putting coolant in the crankcase which causes the main bearing failure. Done deal. Just an example I'm used to.
BTW- how much can I get a sr20 engine with stupid low mileage and a warranty for? Thanks for any input as I'm considering a blown motor ser.
Lack of checking oil and just stupidity i guess. Or just not knowing anything about a car and wanting what everyone else is getting to be with the "in croud"
You can get a used JDM SR20 with about 40000k for like 550 shipped from soko.
I somtimes think that we read alot about blown motors here on the forum is because keep in mind this forum is mostly about peformance. So what I mean is I think most of the car here on the forum are ran pretty hard, hence the blown motors.
Also like mentioned above I would say lack of maintenance. There are still some guys here on the forum that have very high milage motors in there cars and they are still running like champs with very impressive power.

So it's not worth tearing one down to fix it I would say. So it's true in Japan they can't go past 40k on their engines due to emissions? Wow. That's cool to know. I wouldn't think it's too hard to pull that engine. I have a 2 car garage and plenty of tools and can borrow an engine hoist.

Indeed. That's one of the greatest blessings of the SR20:aside from being durable and reliable, they are cheaper to replace than rebuild.
As for the blown engines, well, like it was said before, most of the time it's just neglect or abuse that pushed the engine over the edge. Normal driving(I define normal as not redlining it at every moment) shouldn't be too much of a burden.
What you do(or forget to do) at 50,000 miles will come back to haunt you later on down the road (75K, 100K, 150K; who knows?) So proper maintenance is a must from the very start.
An ounce of prevention is better than a pound of cure, especially when it comes to cars.

Luckily I drove like that with my first car, a brand new 1990 Civic Si, which could take it. I couldn't kill it. Then again, I changed the oil every 3000 miles, plugs about every 10k, bled the brakes often, replaced brake fluid with Motul Dot 5, etc. I beat the living crap out of that car. I was in the Navy and drove it 136,000 miles in 2 years 9 months. That car saw 110-120 mph just about every other day. Nowadays, I'm stuck in slow moving traffic here in Raleigh Nc and never ever drive like that.
$525 shipped is cheap. If I didn't do the swap myself, what's a fair price for the labor?
Again, thanks for the info.
PS- I still have the 1994 Motor Trend Bang for the Buck article in which they compared the 94 SE-R against other sports coupes. That's my fav of all time.
You can definitely beat on these motors if you maintain them properly. Look at Greg Perry, he has around 160L miles IIRC, and the car has seen lots of nitrous and boost on the original motor without any problems.

when you say maintained properly, do you mean just pretty much following the maintenance schedule outlined in the owners manual, or are there some other things to be done that are less obvious?
they stole my car and the person who stole it blew it but ** that, the guy who i bought it from did not take care of it, slipping clutch all the time, no 1st, 3rd, and 5th, motor was real dirty, kinda still is, Pitch Black Oil, crappy wires and stuff like that, i bought it in october, the most ive driven it is like 85 miles, 77 were from pasadena to where i live.....
I recently took a long road 3,085 mile road trip averaging 75-85 mph for 4-5 hours at a time(about 3500-4500 rpm). The engine burnt little if any oil and still runs good. I firmly believe following the maintenance schedule and the owner's driving habits are the key.
Oh yeah.........not driving like it was stolen also helps too.
HEY PEOPLE change your oil!!! my 96 G20 has 152,000 miles with lots of mods done. I'm at about 245-250 hp. without my S4 cams or chip right now have those in about about 1mo. after brakes and suspension. engine is still going strong.
i think it seems like a lot of peeps are posting about blowing their engine cause people only really talk when its sumthin bad or great. like u never see the post "oh my car is running great. i didnt do anything to it but at least its not blown up" you know what i mean. there is only the "i just installed....." and "my car got wrecked" posts

broke as a joke but still tryin to hook up my ride.
I would love to hear about SR20's that have high miles and still running strong.
My G has around 175k on it. Can't tell for sure since the odometer broke at 126k.
well, I have 107k, had it since new. I've auto-x'd about 2 dozen times, over 100 passes at the drag strip, road course raced it at TWS (2.9 mile road course, hitting 130 on the straight), spent about hours worth of time at 1.x mile road course here in town. Had all the bolt-ons from about 25k-70k and I've had the turbo for the last 35k. The car sees redline every trip, is driven hard on the twisties. I've driven 15-17 hours straignt a dozen times. And I still never have to add a drop of oil. I always let the motor warm up before I beat on it and I change the oil often, every 2-3k miles, Mobil 1 5w-30. Oh yeah, just trapped over 110mph in the 1/4 two weeks ago. The compression is down on one of my cylinders but that's because I was running very lean and getting detonation. Even so, it still hauls!
130k miles on my cars. Runs great.
Blowing motors on SR20DE's? Have you read what these guys do to their cars? They hear "Bullet proof Block" and they think they can boost it to hell but sure nuff to hell it goes. Not changing Oil my ass, They just run the thing to the ground thinking it's not going to brake.
