Transmission question

I recently purchased a used manual transmission off a Japanese S14 and the previous owner had the bright idea to weld shut the refill plug. My question is, can I refill the gear box through the shifter, if so what weight gear oil and how many quarts.

From what i remember its cool to fill it through the shifter. At least on s13s that always seemed like the easiest way to do it for me.
