I have a problem with my car and no one seems to know what it is. When i drive with my windows down sometimes i smell a gas smell. Does anyone else have this problem and what do u think it could be? I dont believe i am losing any gas milage but it has been doing this a little while after i bought the car. Any help will be apprecitated!
You know, I have the very same problem since long ago. If I cruise at highway speeds and then stop for a toll, when I roll down the window to pay, I get the smell. I've looked everywhere trying to find the source of the smell at no avail. I got bored and eventually decided to ignore it. Gas mileage is still the same so... beats me

Boost, NOS and displacement... Find a replacement for that!
Check the gas fill return line. There's a short 7-8 inch section of rubber hose that connects the metal return line to the gas tank that is prone to leaking. Make sure you replace it with another section of fuel rated hose.

"The most difficult subjects can be explained to the most slow-witted man if he has not formed any idea of them already; but the simplest thing cannot be made clear to the most intelligent man if he is firmly persuaded that he knows already, without a shadow of doubt, what is laid before him." — Leo Tolstoy
Where is this line exactly? is it closer to the gas tank?
Yes.
Jack up the rear of your car. Crawl under the car. Just in front of the driver's rear wheel you'll notice the fuel fill and air return lines coming from the gas fill port that lead down into the fuel tank. On my car, the smaller diameter air return line (rubber portion) was leaking at the connection closest to the tank. I simply purchased a section of the same size fuel rated hose and replaced it. Problem solved.
I had this problem, turned out to be the fueline at the fuelfilter was crackedslightly and was the culprit.
aztecred92, the prokits are working nicely on my classic, thanks again, o, and i am installing a new tranny in the classic too, lol, no stripped out bolts this time, ed
Under the rear seat, where the fuel sender is, there is a giant o-ring between the sender and the gas-tank. This giant o-ring tends to deteriorates and swells over time, and it will no longer sealing up the gas-tank, hence the gas-smell.
Simply replace it will cure the problem. It involves removing the rear seat, undoing six 8mm bolts, remove the metal ring that clamps down the sender unit, *very carefully* lifting out the sender unit and swap out the o-ring then reassemble, just like what you will do when you replace your fuel-pump.
Part number: 17342-01A00.
I paid $7.74 for it at the local friendly Nissan dealer. I am sure it will be cheaper if you order it from Greg Vogel @ Quality Nissan.

I agree with Ed. I had this same problem on my 2 '91 SE-Rs. Replacement rubber fuel line from Checkers at $.12/inch solved the problem. Of course making the line between the metal fuel line at the firewall and the filter longer makes for easier future fuel filter replacements.

Just a tip, but disconnect the negative wire from the battery prior to doing this!

I bet this is where 90% of you are getting the smell from. This happened to my car, my girls car, my sisters car, and 2 of my buddies cars. we are a nissan family.

youd think after 13 years these lines wouldnt start to dry rot or crack
I had the same issue, I found both the lower and uplines cracked, so i decided to change all of them, even the sent and return lines.. now i can live with knowing that my car wont be like johnny storm and FLAME ON!!
