i dont see how that is possible, the compressor works just as hard. 1,2,and 3 are just resistors that keep less power from goin to the A/C fan. i dont see how that has to do with the car over heating. except maybe since the fan is sucking more cold on setting 4, the compressor has to stay engauged more, and the extra strain is causing it to over heat. i say check to see if the fan on the passenger side of the radiator is comming on when you turn on the air. good luck.
