Name this noise (from tranny)

With the car running and the gear is set to neutral.

1) engage the clutch - the 'noise' stops
2) disengage the clutch - the 'noise' comes back

It seems to be coming out of the tranny. Sounds like a little ticking noise. At other times the noise does not come up at all.

Now I'm thinking it's a throwout bearing needing to be replaced. I just refilled the tranny with Redline MT-90 (all 4 quarts) so I doubt the level is low.

Any suggestions?

Re: Name this noise (from tranny)

Judging by the symptoms, yep, I'd say throwout bearing!

Re: Name this noise (from tranny)

Did you just replace the clutch? Is the new one a clutchnet? If so its the throw out bearings. Ive seen a lot of posts about people installing the clutchnet TO and having the same problem. Me included. I dropped my tranny again and put in an OEM new part and it went away.

Re: Name this noise (from tranny)

Thats not the T/O bearing , if the clutch is pushed in and the noise goes away .....take your foot off the clutch and the noise comes back it is a transmission bearing...

Hmm, usualy the T/O bearing will only make noise when you push on the clutch , not when the clutch pedal is out ...

Re: Name this noise (from tranny)

OK so I'm presuming it's the T/O bearing. How safe/unsafe is it to drive around like that?

Re: Name this noise (from tranny)

I'm positive it's the throw out bearing.
