I've read all the posts here, used charlie2020's write up on how to get into timing mode. Tried the one on se-r.net and the one from the FSM. I've probably tried to get into timing mode over 20 times. The reason I need to get the car into timing mode is my idle is very inconsistant and I think my timing is off. I've followed all the procedures (they're all similar) exactly, but once uplugging the TPS (or TPS + IACV) the car will idle from 500-700 or at above 1200 depending on how i turn the idle adjust screw, I can never get it to go to 750ish, it's always +- 200rpms. So it ends up I adjust the timing and idle anyway, but both are off. I can't get my timing to remain steady, and like I said the idle is different every other day (sometimes at 800, sometimes at 1100, sometimes the car won't idle). Any ideas? For the most part the car runs great at speed. Would going to a nissan dealer and hooking up to a consult help?
warm up your car then remove the tps. ground the 2 wires on the tps (black and pink) with a paper clip or something similar. then adjust your base idle first then your timing.

Clear those codes and try again. They will probably come back everytime you turn the car off and back on. Keep clearing them until you finish. Set your idle, then your timing.
shouldn't the base idle be at like 700rpm cause mine idle's at like 1000 rpm and the idle screw doesn't work at all....can i still time the car????
It depends on what mods you have. If you have s3/s4 program, the idle should be 850 to 950 rpm and the timing should be at 15*.
What do you mean by the idle screw doesn't work? If your base idle is not set, then, you're going to have a hard time adjusting your timing and idle screw. Everytime you try to adjust your (timing) distributor, your rpm goes up or down. Try doing what I said, then adjust your idle and then timing.
you guys were right about the ecu codes, I cleared them and the idle was better. Had an appointment at the dealer this morning, so I didn't mess with the idle or timing too much. When my car was hooked up to the consult, we got it into timing mode and set it at 15. I did get lots of errors for faulty IACV valve. Only problem with that is my IACV and Air Regulator are less than a month old items from Mossy Nissan. What are the chances that the new IACV is bad? Could there be something else that throws the IACV off? I'm going to double check the install, might remove it and reinstall it, just to be sure. The car does run a bit better now that the timing and idle are right. Just that idle couldn't be set perfect becuase the ecu keeps throwing the faulty IACV code.
