checking cam timing

I think my NX jumped a tooth at start up. Is there any way to check the timing without tearing the motor apart?

Re: checking cam timing

with # 1 cyl at TDP the intake cam is supposed to be at 10 o'clock and the exhaust should be 12. This has to be the worst setup i've ever seen. You can have the exhaust pointing straight up, and it can be 1 tooth or the one next to it, which is right?

setting up the cams in relation to eachother is solid, 20 rollers between the dots on the cam gears. But in relation to the crank, there has to be a better way.

we need some solid say of checking it, and pics would be great.

im gona pull my vc and take pics of mine, im not even sure if its right.

Re: checking cam timing

ok here we go, i pulled everything apart because i need answers.

Look closely, are the cams advanced 1 tooth? they look like they are a hair to the right. Also with a timing light the flash is way past the marks with the tps unplugged at like 1300 rpm, when i plug in the tps the flashes come back to the marks on the pulley.

Re: checking cam timing

You have to keep turning the engine untill the marks on the timing chain show up *and* show up @TDC on #1.

I can't see the marks in your pictures.

Once you get it to turn and you see the marks and it lines up on one or both cams when it is on TDC on #1 you will be able to tell if you skipped a tooth or not.

The only way you can tell if you skipped a tooth is if you have the chain in the right position *as well* as the cams in the right position.

You need a FSM if you don't have one already. Period.

hope that makes sense.

Re: checking cam timing

first off, is the number 1 cylinder on the compression stroke?, or are you 180 out?

Re: checking cam timing

you can tell by the pictures that it is on the correct stroke. If it skipped on the crank sprocket than things get not so easy b/c the marks can line up on the i/h sprocket but still be incorrect.

There was a good post by 99SE-L that said how to correct your timing. I feel your pain though this happened to me.

Re: checking cam timing

Everything looks okay to me. I always put the exhaust cam at 12:00, then count back 20 pins, and line the intake cam up from there. Try adjusting your idle down to 800 or 900 rom and recheck the timing. You may have to unplug the AAC valve for the idle to drop.

have you checked your ignition timing yet? that would tell you if you are off on the exhaust side atleast.
