how to repalce valve springs W/ head on?

I bought a overhead valve spring compressor, and there isnt much room in the SR head to use it. I read that if you put a socket on the retainer and pound it with a hammer it will compress the spring and the keepers will fall out. If that works, how do i re-install the new springs?

yikes. dont try the socket and spring deal. if i were you (since i have done the springs and retainers on the SR recently) i would use the compressor tool if its like this one. if its the clampy style forget it.

thats what i used, but modified it a little (ground out a better notch for the pivot point to achieve the best angle and leverage for our head)

now you'd need to add air into the cylinder to keep the valve up (about 100psi) i believe this is a 2 person job, i did half of mine myself but it wasnt the most fun. use some thick sticky assembly grease, i used it on the retainer locks.. to keep them in place when releasing tension off the spring.

i actually did mine with the head off since i wanted to check the pistons out (10:1's and sodium ex valves WOOHOO) and R&R the HeadGasket.

Not only that, when the keeper pops off, the valve drops into the combustion chamber.

Get the right tool, do some searching here for techniques to keep valves from disappearing when the retainers are off.

For sure, make sure you have a good 100psi in the cyl. Make sure the cyl. is at top dead that your working on. I always do cyl. 1 and 4 at the same time, then 2 and 3 cyl. at the same time. Saves a little time on the job. I always use a small pocket screwdriver with the little magnet on the top. Use that with grease to ease the installation of the keepers.

Honkeybizkit, do you have the part # for the spring comressor your using?

oh, i also at first used 120psi in the cyl, without someone holding a wrench on the crank pulley. YIKES!! Then i used 40psi and it held the one valve i took the spring off of just fine.
