Ok last night i was out messing around with my car, and i pushed it alittle bit and when i stop i am hearing a really loud and annoying sound and i look at my dash and my brake and my battery lights are on.. so i pull into my apartment and the car is smoking so i let it cool down and now it will start but it squells really loud and idle bounces around n turns off... and it smokes around the belts and it smells like rubber but i cant really tell what it is... could it be the compressor bearing in the alternator?? timing belt?? i mean i have no idea and the car is out of commission so one help please....
Usually when the brake and battery light come on your alternator is fried. That's what happened to me, I didn't get the burning smell so maybe your belt is just slipping. Maybe try to snug up the belt on the alternator a little bit. When the car is running test the voltage at the battery posts, should be 14.4V approximately if the alternator is fine. If it's around 12V then your alternator isn't working.

I was thinking it is the Alternator bearing locked n the belt keeps going when i crank it up... could my Alternator go bad because i put a new battery with more amps n the alternator A) couldnt handle it at all or B) is too old n worn to handle it??
usually when you hear a loud squeeking noise when you start the car, thats the alternator belt. I agree with the people saying your alternator is fried.
Anyone know a good write up on how to install a Alternator?? i dont like mechanics touching my car, i like to do my own work but i am ifey about this one..
Wow a new twist i just got a new starter 3 days ago and i went to turn on my car and as soon as it gets any power i hear the starter just spinning away not cranking anything.... so now i need a newer starter and a alternator!!! I have been tryin for the last 30 minutes to get the old starter out but there is no space in there......
Luckily the starter has 1 year warrenty but installion is a b*tch...
The alternator is easy to get out if you removed your A/C from the bottom. Otherwise you should be able to pull it out the top. I couldn't because my intercooler pipes were in the way.
Ok it took me 3 hours (barely any tools n stock jack) but i got out the A/C compressor and bracket and the Alternator... I CAN NOT get to the starter!!! I am going to take the alternator to the autozone and get it checked tomorrow... where can i get a NEW alternator? or should i get a remanufactured one?? i mean i got a remanufactured starter 2 days ago and its burnt out(1 year warrenty... yay).... but that might be because the alternator i am thinking..... advice please!
