My Friend has an NX and he has done what i think is called advance timing. Basically his revs idle at 1500rpm constantly.
I am the better driver than anyone in my group of friends and so i beat him by 3-5 car lengths when he was idling the same. i have done so to most nx's in my area.
I raced him the other day after he upped the timing and he beat me by a small amount.
My Questions
1) Does advance timing make such a great difference ?
2) Does it damage ur engine ?
3) Whats a good rpm idle level ?
4) How do u guys launch your sr20de motors ? How do u perform your best take off ?
Advancing timing is when you adjust the timing forward, like from 15 degrees to 17 degrees. I don't understand how revving his engine at 1500 rpms, which is barely higher than idle, would do anything. Launching most cars at that rpm would be hindersome if anything and there's now way to drive the car at a constant 1500 rpms.
I dont understand what advance timing is now... which section of the block. can u show me a picture of where ? sorry but i really wanna understand what it is since i am totally wrong... I love learning new things about cars. So changing ur idle time from normal isnt advance timing ??? i feel like a newb. So does advance timing make a big difference ??? and to what ?.
By the way he drives his car constantly above 1500rpm, will this damage his engine. And is this a substantial advantage. I mean he beat me by half a car so it must be improving his driving. It seems as though it is to me!

thanks mate, so it improves throttle responce cool. i think i want mine at 17 degrees in case i get the ecu later. i want someone to do this for me. i live in sydney australia ?
Guys but my main question is does advance timing involve the idle revs going up ? cause my friend claims to have done the timing and his revs are stable 1500rpm.
advancing the ignition timing has absolutely nothing to do with the idle. The only reason you should be idling above 800rpm is if you have some cams with extreme overlap and the car won't idle otherwise.
advancing the ignition timing changes when the spark goes off relative to crank angle. you want it more advanced (before top dead center) at higher rpms. more to it, but i'm sleepy

man, my advice is this...get a timing light and a 12mm wrench and jump on in. plenty of threads on how to do it, and it's really easier than it sounds. you'll be happier for it.
best bet would be an auto parts store. if $$ allows, look for a "dial-back light", they make it a bit easier on our cars since there's no absolute 17 degree mark. they're usually a few dollars more, but you'll be suprised how many burgers/beers/smokes your friends will trade to use it for a day, so it's well worth it. as for the wrench, any hardware store should have one.
That is the crank pulley. It does have those marks on it. You shine the timing light onto the pulley from above it. It is on the side of the engine, so you open the hood and just lok straight down on it. Then you turn the distributor, which is on the other side of the engine. The pulley is spinning at engine speed, but you will see the marks move either back or forth-depending on if you are advancing it or retarding it. To put it at a specific degree, there is a thin pin/needle sticking out right above the pulley, so you line that pin up with the timing degree you want. You have to estimae the degree if trying to get somewhere between 15 and 20, but its not hard to get.

You need to buy a Factory service manual and follow the instructions on how to set the ignition timing. Or follow the instructions on SE-R.net.
Basically you just get the car in timing mode. Then adjust the Distributor until you get it to where you want it. You will verify the timing with a Timing light via the marks on the crank pulley. When you shine the light down there while the car is still running you will see the pin sticking out and pointing at how much advance you have. 15 is stock and you can go up to 19 depending on your quality of gas. Most people run 17-18 on 92-93 octane. If you have better gas like 95-96 then run 20 degrees. You'll notice a nice jump in power.
Just my experience on the subject. On anything I have ever worked on, advancing the timing has increased the idle. Some cars more than others, but it always has, in my experiences. Basic rule for sr20's: If your cars in timing mode, adjust the idle anyways. It won't take more that a min. to do and is easy.
