Oil Pan Baffle

I've got a new oil pan and an oil temperature sender that I'd like to install. I (obviously) need to find a time that the car can sit for a while to allow the liquid gasket to cure. However, prior to doing this, I want to put a bung in the oil pan to receive the oil temp sender. I figured the best place to put it would be in the rear of the pan (figuring I'd be keeping it away from getting ripped out by any road debris I might happen to run over) but the shop I took it to (thank God) asked me if I'd be interfering with the baffle. I know a friend had bunged another oil pan for me (which I subsequently screwed up) but don't remember where that bung was. Does anyone have an idea as to where the best place would be to put a bung for a sender that's sticking into the oil pan by (from my recollection) a half inch or so? I don't want to pull the oil pan off, figure it out, put it back together, wait for it to cure, get the bung welded in, and then start all over again... I want to do it once and only once - the right way! Any help is mucho appreciated!

Kieran, I think if you put it an inch or two off-center you should be fine. You'll want it relatively low to be sure it isn't being uncovered.

George - inch or two off-center in EITHER direction or one in particular? And thanks for the reminder to keep it low. Don't want to be too low though

My pan is currently at the welders getting my bung welded in. If you are looking at the pan from the front of the car it would be in the driver side rear corner of the pan. it is low enough to be covered by oil and won't interfere with anything else.

PS: watch out for the oil pickup also.

I have mine installed on the flat part, right above the drain plug.

Another thing I'm just thinking of now… if I'm slightly off and there is a discrepancy between the temp sender and the baffle, I can notch out the baffle, right? That shouldn't be a problem if need be (I'm assuming)

Mine is far enough down, to where is doesn't come near the baffle. I have a picture at home.

Did you only tap the pan, and not add anything else?

Maybe I am too tired to understand what you mean? I had the welder drill a hole in the pan. Then he added his own bung and welded it on the outside of the pan. He also spray painted it all black so it looks really clean. He did that and added another bracket on my Spearco for $25.

Oh, ok. I thought you just had the sensor threaded into the pan with nothing else. I had a piece of 3/16" steel welded to the inside of my pan, then threaded the hole for the sensor into that.

Anyone have an idea as to a good source for a bung that I can buy and bring to the shop of my choice?

do you know what size you need? 1/8 NPT?
anyway, go to Jegs.com or summitracing.com and search for "weld bung", they have a few of those things. Obviously get one that is steel.

Do already have the gauge? My gauges came with several different fittings...I just had one of those welded onto the pan.

Otherwise, what compression said...

What Steve and I did was go to Home Depot, and get some 1/8 steel, and cut the amount you need. I then drilled a hole in it, and tapped it for the sensor.

I'm not doing what you guys did... you're ghetto! :-P

Yes, the size is 1/8" NPT. I'll try jegs and summitracing. I had a brain freeze this morning and couldn't think of some of the standard sites

Yeah, like you and Ray aren't the same way. I've seen your "spring compressor" video. That was along the lines of "hey,y'all, watch this."
