Gauge Cluster problem

Well Ive got this problem and i dont know where to start looking at. My dash dosent work when i start the car up....Untill i rev it past 3k (im assuming because i dont know what rpm im at) This problem just happend after i pulled my motor to drop a new crank into it. Never did it before. also when i started my car up i did not have my alternator connected and the dash worked fine. ( becides my battery and brake lite DID NOT come on with the alt disconnected) the minute i connect the alt the problem came back. also when i was letting the car ilde i noticed smoke comming off of one wire on my postive terminal ( the wire has a connector in the middle of the wire attaching to the wiring harness and the pos. terminal.) But the thing is i doubt the alternator could be messing up internally because there is nothing to ground out on. there is no wires in the alt. just magnets and copper wire creating a magnetic field. I guess im going to chace wires. anyone got any good starting points..
