Grinding Shifts

Hey guys, I dont know what's up with my transmission..

I just put in all 4 motor mount inserts and the shifter bushing in hopes to make the grinding in the shifter go away. The problem is this:

-With the clutch all the way down, I feel/hear grinding going into all gears except 5th.. most noticebly 2nd,3rd, and 4th.
- Most of the time, the grinding is most evident while moving and downshifting/upshifting. (Not rollling, the gears are easier to go into but the grinding is still there if you shift very slowly from neutral into gear)

- It is also almost impossible to move the shifter into 1st gear while going over 5mph.

I have adjusted the clutch cable variious times to no avail. Please tell me my clutch is not going bad? and also, am I damaging my transmission driving around like this? the tiny grinds cant be good..

When you grind youre not grinding gears but rather your dog teeth. I would think your syncros are worn. What car do you have and how many miles?

sounds like the clutch isn't fully letting out, but tightening the clutch cable should've fixed that - how tight do you have it? When was the last time the tranny fluid was changed?

When I adjusted the tranny cable all the way to the top, it made clutching almost uncomfortably unbearable.. (no spring back action to the clutch, and it engaged reallly high) At this point the tranny fluid is the only suspect because I myself have never looked at it or changed it and I am unsure about the previous owner..my grandmother. She took it to nissan religiously but is that something they change at time specified intervals?

is it still all the way to the top? Exedy had a tsb for their Honda clutches, because people adjusted them out too far, so when you fully engaged the pedal, the diaphragm spring would extend too far and actually press the clutch disc into the flywheel, effectively re-engaging the clutch. That explains the lack of spring back. And yes, they do flush tranny fluid for most cars at about every 30k - whether that interval is necessary really depends on the tranny though

I do not mean to Hijack this thread, but I am having the same problem with my 200sx SE-R, and I am thinking about changing the motor mounts and shifter bushing, as well as changing the transmission fluid. If anyone else has any suggestions, I would really appreciate it as well.

Thanks!

There are no "dog teeth" in car transmissions. Dog boxes are only on bikes and race cars. correct me if im wrong. I would say that the synchros are toast, try changing the MTL.

Synchros are probably toasty roasty.

Maybe the clutch itself is dead? Pressure plate could be dead.. throw out bearing could be dead.

Get a new clutch

It's most likely the tranny fluid. Change it - it's cheap and easy to replace! If that's not the problem, it may be your syncros. Unless you know what you're doing, screwing with tranny internals isn't such a great idea. At that point, you might either deal with it or get a new tranny from a junkyard or something. I'd bet it's your fluid.

On my fiancee's old 93NX, I replaced the clutch but when I put the driver side axle back in, I guess the seal got damaged so it started leaking out of the axle seal. It started with 4th gear grinding ever-so-slightly and then eventually it was hard to shift into 1st at any speed but *ZERO* and then the other gears were affected as well. Replaced the fluid and it was fine... even better than I had remembered!

On my 200SX, I've mushed 4th gear and I think the syncros are bad. I did too many quick shifts to 4th (on track at Pocono South onto the banking) and it yells at me any time I quickly downshift to 4th. If I'm gentle, it's fine

Back when I had the 1.6, 1-3th would grind. 4th once in a while. Used Redline MT90 and never had a grind after that, no matter what rpm.

Buy a new clutch!
Dont just fly off and have the tranny torn down, either way you will have to remove it, a easy way to see if its internal, remove the drain plug briefly and see if there is excess metal on the magnetic plug, what you see will be your answer for internals, it doesnt sound to me like internal, but you never know, i would investigate, parts changers are a dime a dozen, mechaincs narrow the problem down to the root and repair what has failed/failing.
