Anyone using the MSD 8969 to activate the solenoids? Will it work?

I don't know why you would want to use this as it turns the circuit on and off at the specified RPM's.

In a simple answer, no.

I run a window switch for my cams, but it turns both cams on and no it wont turn them off as long as theres no rpm pill in that slot. Just use one pill in the ON slot.

I see what you are all saying. But, if the OFF lead was wired into the solenoid ground, this would deactivate the solenoid.

The msd 8969 is a different unit that does not use the pill switches. I was just wondering. It has the same features, on/off at desired RPM, only controlling the ground. I think this can work. Correct me if i am wrong.

I installed the window switch with no problem. This unit is alot simpler and cheaper. Thanks to a PM from a certain person who was able to shed some light on the installation. Thank you.

Amen to the simplicity and lower cost!

Glad to hear it worked for you just as it worked for several other cars that I know of.

Easy. There are 5 wires on the MSD.

Yellow = switched ground
grey = not used
red = power
black = ground
white = RPM signal

Wire the positive wires off of the solenoids directly to the battery, preferably with a fuse. Run the negative wires of the solenoids to the yellow wire on the MSD. The red goes to a switched power source (so that it turns on and off with the ignition), black goes to a ground on the block, and I hooked up the white wire to the yellow/green wire coming off of the ignitor chip (on B13's).

That's it! Set the 1st "on" RPM switch to desired RPMs, and set the 2nd "off" setting of the MSD (for the unused gray wire) to a real high unused RPM setting (like 13,000 rpm). Be sure to set it to a 4 cylinder, and then..you are done!

By the way, this makes both cams come on at once. Otherwise, you'll need two window switches. As mentioned in another thread, the solenoids take power directly from the battery, and the MSD 8969 simply completes the ground at a certain RPM.

Google msd 8969 and the first results are pdf instructions. My only question is how big is it? And did you have to use a relay. It says it handles 2.5 amps, is that enough? Damn, can't type fast enough!

I mounted mine on top (piggy back) on the msd 6A box and plugged the white rpm wire into the side of the box. The 8969 is no wider, and shorter than the length of the 6A unit. I did use a relay, but only for extra insurance. This is for a race car. I do not think it would be a problem without a relay.

The few cars I have seen/used it in do not use a relay.
