Thermoblok spacers - scientific study for those still wondering

Outlaw Engineering make Inlet Manifold spacers for the SR20VE to reduce the air charge temperature. I measured temps before and after, you can see the results here: http://www.digitaltrading.co.uk/sr20ve/thermoblok.htm I thinks that its pretty conclusive that they do work.
Happy motoring Paul.

Nice work!

So I take it from the results that you didn't re-route the coolant lines that run through the t/b? at least the spacer is now stopping alot of the heat transfer into the intake manifold!

You're correct I did not. I'm your low maintenance kond of motorist. In the winter at lower temperatures you can experience ice formation in the throttle body due to the venturi effect , Bernoullis law, pressure and temp drop are related. Also, it would take longer to reach tickover because the temperature determined idle adjustment relies upon the heated throttle body to drop the revs inside a reasonable warm-up period.

Thanks Paul

Paul, great website. I read it a while back when I first considered a VE swap.

I'll be using it as my main basing for the wiring harness in August when it comes to my VE swap.

so since im here in south fla and it never gets below 40degrees here i could get these thermo block spacers and not have to run the heater hoses thru the throttle body and get even cooler intake temps. hmm good to know.

It is interesting to speculate, I know that people in California have done this. How much difference would it make? You have a yard of inlet track before the TB and 14" of manifold after the TB, the TB is only 3'' long just how much heat does that impart to the charge? There are downsides, I'm guessing that your throttle warm-up adjustment is on the TB, if you disconnect the hoses then your warm-up cycle could last 30 minutes instead of 15.....you could have a warm-up (choke-out) idle of 1200 rpm for upto 25minutes instead of 10. I don't know really.
Perhaps someone else can give feedback here.

Thanks Paul

Well, I'm in NZ, it gets pretty cold down here in winter, but not really freezing temps in the North Island where I am....I have the spacers on my VE, and have re-routed the coolant lines. I don't have any cold idle issues - only sits at ~1100rpm for a minute or too then down to 700-800rpm
Noticeable difference in touch on the plenum & t/b...I have a stainless strut brace that i can't touch after a run...and that's just from the engine bay temps, I can rest my hand comfortably on the plenum (couldn't before the spacers where installed) I can only assume that's got to be a good thing
sorry, no dyno comparison though, bit expensive!
Cheers, nismotoy.
