Project VE Build Up : Begins

Ok folks, I am going to do a complete, in-depth write up of a DE/VE hybrid. Pistons, rods, headgasket, N1 manifold, all the tricks, bells and whistles. Surely no one cares, but I'd like for at least one person to follow this page and watch my parts and build up take place. And I'd rather it be other SR/VE owners, than my girlfriend that watches me jump up and down when my parts get here, .

First things first, pistons. Browsing a few sites, and doing a tad bit of research, I went ahead and ordered some pistons, VIA Greg Vogel at Mossy Performance (I plan to purchase about 80% of my parts through him, since he is one of few that can get VE parts...especially new).

Item # on the site is A2010-VV20V. OEM SR20VE piston, will find out exact compression ratio once I head to the machine shop in a few days. My guess is, around 10.5-10.7:1, possibly a touch higher.

Here's my list of things to buy:

Eagle Rods (Next on my list, will probably order tonight)
N1 Manifold Kit from Mossy
VVL Oil Pump Kit from Mossy
OE Bearings from Mossy
VE Rings from Mossy
VRS 3" Exhaust kit, or under rear crossmember (As seen in Members Rides section)
VVL Head gasket
SR16, or N1 cams (Undecided, due to price)
Port and Polished head
JWT valves springs and retainers
Custom Steel +/- 8* cam gears
Possibly oversized valves, still doing my research

May even add a little juice to her, once it's all said and done.

The list could go on, and I'm probably going to add to it. Once I get my block to the machine shop, I'll start taking in depth pictures of drilling and tapping the head, machining pistons/head for CR, etc.

Corey

nice build up. i will deff watch as it goes together. im plaining basically the same thing minus im not touching the bottom end at all. im next in line for the n1 mani threw greg ;p. 4-6 weeks before greg gets me n1 springs. trust me zexel ditch the jwt ve springs idea and get n1's. if you wanna know why pm me. fcams is supposobly making ve cams along with springs and gears, so keep an eye on them. check out ferrea for oversized valves. with all that work id recommend jwt cams when they drop or the fcams (if and when). good luck.

Definately interested in seeing how this comes out. But honestly, wouldn't it be easier and cheaper to just get a complete VE and drop it in?

Well, it depends how you look at it. I'm the type of guy that if I have a motor out, I'm tearing it down, inspecting, and replacing parts. Plus, since I'm really ONLY using the head and solenoids, everything else will be "aftermarket". Cams, springs and retainers, intake manifold. So really, why spend $1900 on a motor, then replace the cams, intake manifold, pistons, Etc. That's just the kind of car guy I am though.

depends? not everyone can get 2000 one time like that, its some times easier for some one to peice it together, with marginal money even though it might cost a bit more in the end

why not use the 10:1 flattop pistons? i believe they would yield a slightly higher c/r on a VE. around 11.2:1
