It's alive

The VE fired right up. A bit loud from running just the HS DE primary but sounds like a very solid motor. Still have to hook up VE solenoids using the MSD RPM switches but that should be a easy compared to rewiring the VE distributor connector to accept the wires from the external coil and ignitor. I had JWT reprogram the ECU for the larger injectors and MAF and also remove the EGR temp sensor. The only connector I didn't plug in was the IACV Air Regulator which is not on the VE motor. It may be specific to the 94 and earlier DE's but not sure. There is a IACV AAC Valve and a IACV FICD Solenoid that I hooked up using the connectors from the VE harness. Other connectors used from the VE harness were the MAF, water temp sensor and distributor. Everything else was plug and play using the DE harness. All I need to get it road worthy is a new header. I hope HS completes development soon. I'm getting real itchy now.

YEAHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

So you got your ECU back? What RPM cutoff did they program for? Why did you have them remove the EGR temp sensor?

Did you use the DE throttle body? How did that work out?

Throw on the DE manifold or header and test it out! C'mon man!!

ECU arrived last Thursday. I didn't specify the RPM cutoff so I'm not sure where it's set. I had them remove the EGR temp sensor cause theres no EGR on the VE and I didn't want a check engine light when the plug on the DE harness had nothing to connect to. I used the DE throttle body and DE TPS with no ill effects. I still have a few things I need to finish before I drive it. Battery is bolted in the trunk but have yet to run the cable, needs new VC gasket etc. etc.

BTW, turns out the offset on UR crank pulley is different just enough on the VE that I'm switching back to the VE pulley to be safe.

Congratulations, Jim! Can't wait to see/hear all about it when she's buttoned up and blazing down the highway.

Hotshot is already making a header for the VE. It should be available any day now.

Jim, I dont know if this is any different, but I have the JDM Primera motor, which also has no EGR, and I am still using the stock ECU with no check engine light ever. But maybe if you have it reprogrammed for no EGR it will run better.

Keep us posted, I really want to know how it runs once you finish with everything, and get some pics too!!

Right now I only have 2 DE harness connectors that aren't hooked up to anything. The EGR Temp Sensor connector which JWT took off the ECU and the IACV Air Regulator connector. The car idles fine without the IACV Air Regulator but I'm hoping I don't throw a light for not having this hooked up to anything.

Also, when using the DE throttle body I elected to bypass the water lines going through it. I recall this being mentioned as a free mod keeping the intake air a bit cooler. The main reason for doing it though is the fact that the fittings on the DE TB were smaller in diameter than the fittings on the VE motor. It would require funky hoses with different size diameters at each end.

Once it's on the road I'll do a comparo. DE with all the bolt ons putting down a conservative 145-150 whp vs. a VE with CAI, HS Header, Fidanza 8 lb flywheel, Quaife TBD and a reprogrammed JWT ECU. Should be interesting.

I remember doing that on my 87 Mustang 5.0 LX.

Funny story about that car. I had aluminum underdrive pulleys on the Stang, and was chasing a TransAm into this great uphill sweeper by my house when the crank pulley exploded. Uh oh! Everything ran off one serpentine belt, and I lost power steering just as I was about to crank the wheel over. That was fun.

Did you make a custom CAI? The VE uses a MAF from a Frontier right?

If I went VE I would want a nice CAI, HEADER, Pulleys, JWT ECU and custom exhaust. And a little shot of NOS for that extra ******' ******'!

I'm using a HS CAI, a Frontier MAF adapter plate from Place Racing with black silicon couplers and SS clamps from Hose Techniques.

Those who know me and have seen my car before this transformation can vouch for my attention to mechanical detail. This swap will not disappoint. The goal is to make it look like it came from the factory with the VE motor. Except of course the MSD RPM switches which will be mounted on a clear Lexan plate under the hood where the battery used to be.

I hope to be done with the wiring this weekend. I'll take some pictures right after it's buttoned up. The problem is I'm not smart enough to figure out how to post pictures. Perhaps I could email some pictures to someone who knows how to post them and they could do it for me. Any takers?
