If you mean smog, I doubt it. The engine was never in a US car so, it'll probably won't pass the visual. That's the biggest reason why i haven't done the swap yet.

How does the visual work. Do they have pics of the engines that should be in the car?

Could you just swap the Valve Cover over? Do inspector really know a ve from a de? Hook everything up as good as posible, cheat and lie when needed. Just and idea.

When it comes to inspections I guess I have no ethics.

I was pondering that same idea, but then does this engine have an EGR and o2 sensors? they probably check for that too.

Get creative make it look like it does or retrofit if needed. Isn't the only part of the egr system that you loose in the swap connected to the header if you keep the existing intake system? If so couldn't you get a header with an egr fitting and connect it to the existing stuff on the car. Or weld a fitting on the OEM header. The o2 sensors don't have to work only look like they work. I'm probably smoking crack over here. Am I wrong?

maybe you're right and i'm just not creative enough. But you'll never know, you might be checked by someone who knows their stuff, then you're kinda screwed. In cali, not only do we get the luxury of super strict smog check, 5% of the people have to take their car to an assign smog place. So, know why I kinda get scared of doin this stuff. If they catch you w/ something like this, you have to take it to a ref place and have him do stuff to your car to make it pass and anything that he does, you have to pay, besides the hefty fine too.

I didn't know that. It's easy to be loose and worry free when I don't have to worry about that stuff.

yah, i wish i can say the same. i mean normally, there's probably ways around it. But when you're assigned to a smog only place, it's hard to be creative, u know what i mean?

Here's how to get creative:
My friend, a californian for life, decided to go to college in michigan. While there, he became a citizen of michigan and had all of his cars changed up to michigan's standards, which means, absolutely no smog Pretty creative if you ask me.

I doubt VE would pass the emission in California, but would the JDM DE pass the emission? I am thinking about buying a JDM motor, but worried about the emission.

California just sucks when incomes to car :*(

The VE might mot pass the the visual but it will pass the smog test. This motor in Japan was known for having ultra low emissions. NEO-VVL, if someone can answer what the NEO stands for that might answer the smog question. I know the answer but I want to see if anyone else knows.

The VVL engine might not come here but it it very simular looking to a 2000 + Sentra SE and G20 with the roller rocker motor. They have the same valve cover and very simular intake manifolds, both motors are low port motors so the intakes will bolt on. You will be able to use a 2000 + intake manifold that has the EGR sh*t on it and weld a EGR fitting on the EX manifold and every thing would work as far as EGR sh*t and it would pass the visual.

NEO

I know NEO VVL stands for NIssan Ecology Oriented Variable Valve Lift and Timing, but just wanted to be absolutely sure that it would pass emissions, as well as the visual. Thanks Andreas, your info was very helpful to me in making my decision as to what I am planning for my car.

Hmm, sounds like something I said a couple weeks ago.

If you re-used your US intake and exhaust manifolds with the JDM SR20 then, yes, you could pass both the visual and tail pipe inspection.

But if you have a B14 95+ then you wont be able to run your stock manifold. The Primera motors are all highport vs lowport like your motor. So you'll need to find a USDM 91-94 highport manifold with all the smog crap on it.

The SR20VE is actually a low port. The 91-94 intake manifold would not work because it is not the same diameter as the VE ports and the bottom of the manifold is angled where it meets the head unlike the SR20VE. The high port manifold might work except that the ports are not the same diamater either.

I haven't seen the 2000+ intake manifold but from the sound of it that would be the best bet.
