Want a quiet, no drone exhaust?

Don't know why I haven't posted this before. Recent conversations have inspired me to do so now. People claim that it's not possible to have a quiet, no drone exhaust with a VE. Since I know firsthand that's not the case, here's exactly what I've got:

Stock VE
VE MAF
Calum VE ECU
DIY 3" CAI
SSAC header
3" Magnaflow hi flow cat
Borla 3", 5"x15" round body, perf core muffler for a resonator
3" VRS cat-back exhaust

It's quiet and it doesn't drone.

We'll see if that's still true after I get a larger secondary pipe on there.

I have a very similar setup.... Sitting on my living room floor. I'm actually running an even larger resonator then you (6 inch round 18 inch long body magnaflow). If I have ground clearance problems the plan is to switch to the borla unit that your running. I'll let you know how it works out.

I'll tell you what, when I needed that muffler, Borla was out but they found one through a supplier that same day. They took good care of me, great customer service.

Just a thought. If you have a video camera get someone to stand at a point and drive up to and past them just to see what it sounds like. It'd be nice to hear how different the VE can sound.

If quiet is what you want get a oem muffler off a 3.5 maxima or altima. But install a cutout right before it, that will keep everyday very quiet but when you need the power open the cutout.

I'll be buying a VRS 3" cat back in the next week or so.
I will be running no cat-convertor so I'm looking into a 2.5" inlet to a 3" outlet test pipe.
I hope 1 12" resontaor will keep it quiet. If not, maybe 2 resanotor is a must.

I got custom extractors with a 3" outlet, 3" metal biscuit cat, 3" resonator and a 3" rear muffler... It flows VERY well and has a nice deep throaty note to it. Sounds like a Rottweiler on steroids growling

Hm. I may pull mine out and replace the Magnaflow resonator with that Borla. As I've noted here, mine has one helluva drone from about 2500-3800. Thx.

From what has been said a couple things strike me as interesting.
1) Rob is uing a VRS exhaust, Nothing special/unique
2) 3" is ussually going to be loud
3) Nearly everyone uses a round resonator. So it would seem that the key is the oval resonator. If I still had my car I would be trying as big as possible of a oval resonator that I could fit under the car. I had a a couple different resonators (but never a oval) and I can tell you from my experiance the resonator is the area to work on to kill the drone.

thx Steve. My resonator is now Magnaflow's 4" (I think) "hi flow" piece. Does a GREAT job of resonating ---
Went to a 240?! Cool. Friend of mine stuffed an RB20 with a hair dryer in his, now looking for an RB26. Yes, they fit.

Why would you run a bigger cat back then header-back? Do you plan on upgrading the midpipe?

Steve, Rob is using a round body resonator, not an oval. 15" is the length, and 5 inches is the diameter. I have a 6 inch round body, 18 inch long resonator.

If you're not running a cat, then I would get one long ass round body muffler to use for a resonator. Maybe like 5"x36". As long a muffler as you can fit between the flange of your secondary and the 90* bend.

The exhaust I am building goes a little like this:

Header 3" all the way-->3" electric cutout-->3" cat-->2.25"(24" long, 18" perforated) resonator-->2.25 Borla Muffler for NX2000-->a pretty little exhaust silencer insert in the tip of my Borla(thanks for the idea Hammerin' Hank!)
