New JWT Chip

I received the new chip last night and took off early from work today to try it out. The last chip was damaged during shipment and the car wouldn't start with it. Clark and I suspect it had some static charge damage. I installed the new chip and the car started right up. Let the engine warm up and took it for test drive.

Two words: Holy sh*t!!!!!!

Now I know why I elected to go the VE route. This thing is a freaking rocket. All but an extremely small amount of surging at low to mid load is gone and the car pulls like a mother. It's amazing when the VVL kicks in. It literally puts you back in your seat. At Bigtom's recommendation I'm going to set my base timing back to 13 to play it safe till I get it dyno tuned.

Those considering the VE have nothing to worry about now. It looks as though JWT has hit the right buttons and are very close to a perfect program for the VE. YMMV

What is the chip controlling? You have your VVL solenoids working via RPM Pills right???

I'm glad some people are pioneering this. Can't wait to get one!

The chip has been through a few revisions, mostly modifying the timing maps, though some additional work has been done with the A/F ratios.

It doesn't make much sense having the VVL activation programmed into the ECU when you have more control using RPM switches and pills. Most if not all VE motors in the US are using some sort of stand alone VVL activation.

Jim,

Are you still planning on taking the car to Toronto to see what Yoshio can do? Either way it'd be nice to see a dyno run with the JWT ECU.

I think it's in our best interest to see what Yoshio can do so I'm still planning on it. For the past couple weeks he's been working on the stock ECU I sent him and soon as his new dyno arrives I'll be scheduling an appointment. I want to compare driveability and dyno figures with both ECU's. Worst case I'll end up with an extra VE programmed unit.

I will say this though, JWT has really stepped up to the plate. The latest chip I have is real close to feeling spot on. Either way I think anyone looking to do the swap will not have the teething problems I went through.

Jim this is a great news who's looking in to going VE sometime in the future. Thank you for all your hard work and providing resources for us.

Please keep us updated with your car's progress on Dyno days.

Shoes,

Is your VE Stock? Or have you done stuff? Also why do you need the JWT ECU? Whats wrong with the controller from the car you got the engine from. Sorry eveyone for the dumbo questions but im a bit new to the VE scene .

Also how much is the JWT chip?

Cheers

Go back and read some of the old threads. Shoes has a discription of his car. You will need to look past 60 days because it is old (change the view at the bottom of the screen, right corner) No one uses the stock ecu. 7200 rpm redline and it would be a nightmare to wire it in on most cars.

The motor is stock except for a header, CAI and the JWT programmed ECU. I elected to use the JWT ECU because I wanted the ease of using the stock DE wiring harness. I paid $500 on an S3 program for my DE motor 2 years ago and another $100 for the VE program when I made the swap. I suspect the cost of a VE programmed ECU would now be $700 or more.

I'm going to be testing an alternate ECU program from a guy in Toronto next week. I suspect this will be what I end up using cause the whole process involves dyno tuning to tweak the parameters of the program. The chip will be burned on site based on the readings from the dyno. This process is nothing new to the guys who live next door to JWT. However, the ECU I'll be testing utilizes Techtom software and programming which is widely used by tuners in Japan. It is not a plug and play affair like a JWT ECU. A dyno must be used to optomize the program.

Results will be posted and impressions provided upon my return. If I end up using the Techtom ECU I'll have the JWT unit up for sale if anyone is interested.

Hello everyone,

I read about the VE motors several months ago, and have wanted to swap mine since. do you think it's possible to get a VET? I figure 276hp in a 2500 pound car will get into running 10s. lol.

10s on 276hp????

not likely to happen in an ff setup. cars with 400hp get 11s. 500+hp gets 10

I read the FAQ, and I can't find any reason why you couldn't drop a VET in like any other SR20.

Theretically you can do the swap the same way except for a custom ecu, but that engine is extremely rare and unless you got contacts in Japan I dont know how your gonna get one at a reasonable rate.

BTW to quote someone, just hit the qoute button, right under that person's reply

thanks for the tip

these are new engines right (VET)? I wouldn't plan on putting one in for a few years even if I could. so maybe by then they'll be more abundant.

As far as I know they are fairly new, but also not abundant. I think the VET only comes in one trim level of the Xtrail GT i think so just like any car they only produce a certain amount of the higher powered/more expensive trim.

On the flip, they are kinda like the GTIR motor, not a lot of them but, people got them all over the place now, like 5-10 years later though.
