VVL switches...

In an idle moment this evening after work, I decided to strip off the cam switches and double check they were working. Thought I'd share the pics with you...

Housing is to the left, with the intake, the exhaust cam switch to the right. Below them is the little oil filter that can become blocked and be the cause of loss of high cam...

The oil feed is the banjo shaped open in the center. To the right is the low cam return and to the right are the high cam returns....

This is just the switches that divert the oil the cam followers. The other part is hidden beneath the cam cover. I'll post up a few pics of that part when I strip it down to fit the SR16 cams...

You stated this in the bottom of the second picture ". To the right is the low cam return and to the right are the high cam returns...." That is what I meant.

Ok, I get your question now. The unit of basically an oil diversion switch. when the engine is running below the cam activation point (typically below 5000rpm) oil is fedd into the unit through the central banjo shaped recess and out through the slightly ovaled hole to the right directly back into the cylinder head. When the cam switches are activated, they divert oil though the two holes to the left of the banjo recess and into the high profile cam followers...

Now it makes more sense. Just the engineering side coming out. Don't mind me.

The switches come out easy. Just disconnect the cables, free them off with a spanner, then unscreww them by hand. You can check them simply by connecting up a couple of wires directly off your battery...
the housing is held on by six bolts. 10mm spanner to remove, just watch the gasket. The oil filter is housed just inside the inlet recess. You need an allen key or small hex bolt to remove. Just be careful not to dammage it as it's plastic...
