Water Pipe on SR16VE

hey guys,

need some help urgent!!

found a small pin hole sized leak in the pipe going from the water pump.. cant see where it leads to as the intake manifold is blocking the way.

went to Nissan Ireland and asked them if they had the part, but they said its not on their system (as its an import and they havent dealt with the sr16ve engine much at all) and that it would take a very long time (and it would be very expensive) to get the part, especially if it has to come all the way in from Japan.
do you guys think that this pipe would be of the same size/diameter/measurement as another pipe? and what alternatives could i do?? i'm really stuck as i need the car for work, and am hoping to get the intake manifold off tomorrow.. but the problem is, if i cant source the pipe, is there any reason why i should bother taking off the intake manifold if i cant get a part? or would you guys say that if i got a similar pipe from nissan and cut it to size it should work? or maybe even source one from a motor factors?

any help/recommendations are greatly appreciated thanks for reading..

thanks very much stracyznski, it seems to be this pipe.. but i'm not 100% sure..

does anyone know if this would be the same diameter as any of the other pipes that are used in the engine? Nissan Ireland dont have this part and getting my hands on one could be very very tricky!! was wondering, if i got a pipe from any other part of the engine would i be able to use it? also, to gain access to that pipe, is it a manifold out job? or could i get at it from underneath?

thanks again lads!

I don't have the SR20DE handy to be sure, but I think that pipe should be a standard item on a pre '99 engine....

cheers for the help lads.. lucino took a look at my car earlier and found the pipe that was leaking.. its the pipe that he is talking about and not the one that i circled.. does anyone know about this pipe? do you's think it can be replaced with a different pipe? or even, would there be a way to fix the pipe that is broken.. i.e with a sealant or something!?

Don't know if you would consider this but when I replaced both hoses under the IM I took both examples to my local parts store and showed him both pieces. We matched up both with existing examples from what he had in stock. They were longer than the originals but I cut them to fit. Bends are the same where they need to be and after 2+ years no problems. By the way, if I were you I would replace both now because if one hose is defective the other isn't too far behind.

cheers lads for the info!!

@blusteelsr20, sounds like the best route to take and thanks for the advice, i never considered replacing the other tube, but as you said like.. there is a chance that the other one could be on its last legs aswell! i'll bring the pieces to nissan first and see what they come up with and what crazy prices they'll charge, after that, i'll try the local motor factors and see what they have aswell!!

@civicdragon, thanks again man, i suppose that means that the IM will have to be removed, but hopefully its as easy as you say

while the IM is off, is there anything else I should look at while its off? I.e knock sensor stuff like? (just **** be safe and eliminate ALL problems before i go putting back in the IM)

thanks again lads!! much appreciated

yea i had a leak from one of the pipes when i did my ve install, i didnt tighten down the coupler... so i removed the im.. a few screws are a pain, but if you have a 12mm normal socket, deep socket, 3/8 3" extender, 3/8 6" extender and also a 12mm ratcheting box wrench or a normal box wrench

would like to say thanks to stracyznski, civicdragon, blusteelsr20 and a BIG THANKS to lucino vzr 1!

got the problem solved today after i helped lucino take out the intake manifold!! worked all day on it from 11 in the morning til 8 tonight!! stupid pipes are so hard to take off! not to mention jubilee clips and stubborn bolts!! at least its done, still get the smell of the steamy coolant, but think its because of all the coolant we spilt today changing the pipe!!! what a nightmare it was!! and i hope i will never ever have to do this again!!!

thanks again lads for all the help much appreciated!!

Good to see you got your problem figured out.

I kind of have a related question, my engine's been losing coolant slowly over time, and from time to time, I can actually smell the coolant leaking out, so I know it's not the head gasket. If the water pump was bunk, would it exhibit similar symptoms? I had to get new hoses for all my water lines when I got my engine from the wrecker, because they were all missing, so I'm wondering if it's the water pump, or if I just didn't tighten down one of the clamps properly.

Thanks guys.

i've notoced (on the sr16ve anyway) that the pipe above the alternator coming from the rad leaks on a good few of them i've seen. Not much of a leak, just enough to leave a stain on the alternator or underneath the pipe.

if your coolant is mostly water ie not much antifreeze in it,the water could be just evaporating. You could be loosing water through the pump if it was knackered or there was a bad seal.If it came from wrecker then theres a good chance something is loose.

I'm running about 40% coolant & 60% water atm. I can definitely smell the coolant leaking out, just not sure where it's coming from. All the soft water lines are new, I was thinking water pump, but I'm starting to wonder. I haven't actually looked really hard yet. Engine will be swapped into another shell soon anyways, so might as well check then I figured. Probably be doing the water pump regardless. I would just hate to stick the engine in without fixing the problem, since it's so hard to access when in the car.

Mine was leaking from the higher end of the circled hose above. Should be able to reach down from the top of the engine (by the power steering reservoir) and feel a drip hanging at the droop in the hose. These tend to start leaking when the metal fitting gets corroded. It leaked very slowly and can be very awkward to fix well.
