Hey guys. I was a Honda guy for a good 5 years and now I am making my switch to Nissan. (Lack of decent torque wasn't doin it for me ) I am definitely going to take my upcomming 2dr b13 and swap a sr20ve into it. Now before I go ahead and do that, I have a few questions: (1) What are the main weaknesses (if any) of this motor? (2) Knowing that sr20 trannies are weak, what can i do to strengthen it? (3) Will the VE bolt into the original position of the GA16DE? (4) Where can I find aftermarket motor mounts? (5) Do I need a VE wiring harness? I would GREATLY appreciate answers. Thanks a lot--Matt

You should search, check out the VE FAQ. But to cliffnote you.
1. No weaknesses really
2. Buy a B15 Sentra SE 2.0 or P11 (00'-02' G20t/Sport) Manual tranny
3. Not sure what answer to give you
4. No aftermarket motor mounts from GA to SR
5. No need for a VE wiring harness
VE is a straight replacement for a DE, so buy yourself a car with one already in to save yourself the hassle of swaping engine mounts. It also mean you can use the existing wire harness, however get a VE with a harness as some of the connector might need swaping over...
The only reason I do not want to buy an SE-R off the bat is that I need the gas mileage right now. I drive around just for the sake of driving around (if there is nothing better to do) I know that the VE will have worse gas mileage but for now, I need to keep the 1.6 in there. As soon as I start saving up, I won't have to worry about gas money. I am a student, so I need every penny I can get my hands on. I know it's contradicting. I was planning on doing the swap in a few months and I just need information on the engine and stuff like that.

I think you'll be suprise at the mpg of an SR20. I averaged 40mpg on the DE and when running in the VE I clocked 46mpg....
As far as gas mileage goes, you most likely are running rich. I had the same issue until I got my car properly tuned. I was running a JWT ECU but it was running in closed loop until I had it retuned. After that, I got about 32-35mpg. But I was ALWAYS in VVL. :-)

A healthy DE will get 30 mpg in mixed driving. Or better. If you buy a 1.6 with the expectation of installing a VE later, you will incur additional costs due to tranny swaps, new axels, wiring harnesses, custom motor mounts?, etc. The money that you might save by driving a 1.6 now will not make up for your future costs. I would suggest that it makes more sense to buy the 2.0 now.

sh*t!!!!!!! This obviously must have been highway driving and shifting @ 1500 RPM when stopped or slowed. I wish my SR got that kind of mileage........ then again I have a heavy arse size 12 foot controlling the gas.

That was on a 200 mile shack-down drive with the VE, and I wasn't pushing it. However, the the 39mpg with the DE was at quick motorway and B-road speeds...
I would still like to know if there are any weak points on the engine to work on before dropping it in. I want to make this swap as worth it and as reliable as possible. I keep hearing things about the internals on the bottom end too.

SR20's are bullet proof providing they get a regular oil change and you use the good quality stuff...
