Hi there guys, may name is Tania and I'm from New Zealand. I own a Nissan Pulsar VZ-R and am currently in the process of doing a turbo conversion (keeping the SR16VE block etc, but using SR20DET&VET parts)
I have a T28 Turbo that is all good, but will be reconditioned with upgraded internals, S15 pistons and conrods, & a GTiR crank...
the NEXT hurdle is working out how the hell all this stuff is going to fit into my engine bay! Has anybody done this before? And if so, are there any pics? I HAVE searched but can't find what I am after.
I need to know what my custom manifold should look like (any design suggestions?) and thus where should I mount my turbo, wastegate etc etc.... I plan to relocated the battery to the boot so my pod filter has more room and more airflow, and because I think I will need the space. I also thisnk I'm going to have to rip out the aircon system becuase I'll need the space (damn) correct? Do I need to rip out my radiator and fit a new one and how the heck is my frontmount intercooler going to fit? What size intercooler will I need and am I going to have to 'customise' my front bumper to make it fit? Also will I need a new plennum?
I want the setup to be as financially viable as possible and I want as little lag as possible too! Any suggestions on how the heck this should look would be great! I'v just realised this is going to be a mountain of work and not quite sure where to start!
Any advice would be awesome!
Cheers guys
PS Sorry.... I'm just a girl, have a lot to learn!
you need to go over to the turbo section... a t28 on an sr20 motor can easily be done with stock a/c radiator etc
really just go through some of the post in the turbo section as well as posts in this section and you will find all the answers.. there are tons of threads on turbo buildup being ve or de usng all kinds of internals, turbos and manifolds... there are a few threads with pictures of engine bays to give you an idea of how a setup would fit

Yeah I can see the SR20 setup, problem being that the engine bays all look different to mine... coz mines an SR16VE, i've done a couple searches and can only find one pic of a car that has had a turbo conversion, which looks semi-similar to what i think mine will need to look like. I know nobody im my country has turbo'd the SR16 (which is why i'm having trouble getting advice), has anyone overseas done it? I cant see how it will all fit as heaps of the aircon stuff takes up a lot of room and is right in the way! especially where the front mount will need to go...
to clear up the confuson the motor is exactly the same size and the mounts would go in the same place cause the block and head are the same externally
the displacement difference between the 1.6 and the 2.0 is internally

SR20VE / SR1600VE same BLOCK and HEADS, slightly different internals.
Once you put your DET pistons, crank, rods into your 1600 block there is NO physical difference on the outside of the motor.
In fact your 1600cc motor is no longer, you've got an SR20VE+T in an SR1600VE block.
What I'm trying to say is that you're not actually turbo-ing an SR1600VE, you're turbo-ing a SR20DET (internals) in an SR1600VE block with an SR1600VE head attatched.
Post up a pic of your engine bay; ours are different to the ones in USA, due to the left hand Vs right hand drive set-up.
There are quite a few people on this forum who've done some very smart things with these motors, take your time read throught them all, see what is common, and also take a good look at their reliablity.
Big numbers don't mean too much when you're left on the side of the road with a broken car...
Not my engine, but very similar, except my battery will be in boot and I have a larger K&N Pod squeezed in there not that HKS crap.
Thank guys, yeah I reasise that the SR16 is exactly the same, but the set up still looks different to the pics I am seeing on here, and yeah she is right hand drive.
Not sure bout the ABS but some **** pulled out in front of me not long ago and when i jammed on my brakes she locked up, so I'm thinking no ABS ??
Parts I have so far are GTiR crank, and S15 pistons & rods, T28 turbo... so I realise she will essentially be a SR20DET with the VVL head.
I have searched more than once in these forums and can find NO threads with pics of a turbo SR16VE..... ?? I searched "SR16VE turbo" Anyone know any liks weher I can SEE a turbo SR16VE... ??
Am I right to think my radiator with some slim fans will be okay with a front mount too, and turbo coming accross in front of the engine, but just behind the radiator... is this the way to go? Looks like it is what has been done by others
Yeah i realise reliablility may be an issue but she will be a weekend car only! May have to buy a scooter for my daily hehehe Now THAT's attractive!
Any reason to use the GTiR crank? a DE or DET crank will work just as well and your flywheel will bolt straight up to it.
Just buy a GTiR style exhaust manifold and have it ported to suit the VE head. The T28 turbo should be internal wastegate and should flow plenty of gas to prevent boost creep.
The front mount will be easy to bolt up and there is plenty of room in the engine bay. The stock radiator is fine and you can buy a GTiR type intercooler kit which will bolt up with minimal modifications.
The SR16VE cams are not going to be the best choice but I am sure someone over there can swap you their SR20VE cams for your SR16VE cams.

i'm thinking the ABS unit would be sitting in the lower left corner of the engine bay near that relay box. doesn't look like you have it since you locked up your brakes. if you're planning on using the stock radiator, make sure you at least get the Nismo thermostat which opens earlier than your stock one. i would recommend upgrading your radiator though.
only question is the AC line that runs up in front there.....if you use a DET turbo manifold, you'll probably be fine, but if you use one that mounts the turbo up top, then you may have to do some re-routing.
like i said before the sr16/20 are the same on the outside, so the fitmet would be the same for either so you can do some research on sr20ve turbos...
not toomany people have turbo'd a 1.6 but its all the same

The ABS on the Pulsar sits where the brake mastercylinder normally is for the L/H drive guys, underneath the windscreen wiper motor
Oh?? I was told I needed a 8cw crank... well i've got it now anyhoo and it wasnt any more expensive than the others. Will it bolt straight up?
I am going to do a custom manifold to get the best flow and quality... (i want brand new, 2nd hand ones all seem to be very well used!) all aftermarket manifolds here are made from 305 stainless which is NOT built to withstand heat, so I think custom is the way to go.
The T28 is okay but I'm going to upgrade all the internals -just sorting this at the moment and deciding on the best option, not convinced ball bearing is the way to go- and have an external wastegate (dont have the actuator for the internal anyhoo) and i want to evetually (maybe after turo upgrade) take her up to 300-350hp, which i think will warrant the external
Whats wrong the the SR16VE cams? I thought they were good?? eg. I know people with the SR20VE's who like the 16VE cams better
Please do enlighten me

Your car should look a bit like this when done. The intercooler to throttle body pipe will look exactly like a GTiR setup
Sh*t really? That looks like A LOT of moving stuff (as that doesnt look like my engine bay) Will i need to move the plennum? Wanted to avoid that if poss.
SR20VE steal head gasket from Mossy $85
...in the other thread... Mossy? Can anyone tell me who/what Mossy iS? i DID A MEMBER SEARCH AND THERE ARE TWO BUT NEITHER HAVE EVER POSTED ANYTHING SO SEEMED UNLIKELY I HAD FOUND THE TIGHT PERSON
SORRY I HIT CAPS LOCK

nope thats just a high port motor, you just have to route the intake pipine diferently to suit the high mounted TB.
