VE on a road course

Spent the weekend at Mosport and the VE performed flawlessly. I lowered my lap times from last year by 6 seconds running a best of 1:48.XXX. I attribute 3 of those seconds to improvements in the driver and track familiarity and the other 3 to the increased power of the VE motor. I was shifting at about 7k RPMs because it felt like it was just making more noise than power above that. It was a very hot and humid weekend but water temps remained a steady 210 and oil temps between 240 & 250. The car handled fantastik with the stock front sway bar back on. I could dial in oversteer with increased rear tire pressures or by simply using a bit of trail braking. I couldn't believe how many drivers came over to my pit to ask what I had done to the car and to compliment how it looked, handled and sounded on the track.

I ran with the JWT program all weekend because Yoshio wasn't able to determine the appropriate baseline program to use for the Techtom set up. Every time we hooked up his ECU it ran in limp mode. The good news is we did a baseline pull on his new dyno with the Wolf unit and it put down 181.7 to the wheels.

More good news is the JWT ECU is working pretty dam good. Either I've become used to the small amount of surging at low load or it's magically disappeared. Either way it looks like I'll be sticking with the Wolf unit and working with Clark to refine it a bit more.

Special thanks go out to James McColl for all his help and to Jason Kho for letting us crash at his apartment Thursday night.

When you figure out which one of these it is let us know. I'd really like to know if yours is still surging.

There is really very little if any surging now. I'm confident in JWT's ability to get the program right for anyone looking to do the swap.

This is what I have been waiting to hear. Sorry about the Techtom unit, but good news on every other front. I am very happy for you.

I think it is possible the the ECU relearned the surge and took it out. I wouldn't be surprised if it returned if you reset the ecu.

What rpm did the peak HP come at?

I didn't get a print out of the pull but I think peak power was at about 6800 rpm's

It's my favorite track next to the Glen. Last year everyone was double apexing turn 2. This year the preferred line was a single apex though several drivers were still treating it as a double. I prefer to single it. My favorite part of the track is turn 8 and the quick transitions to 9 & 10. I couldn't believe how much speed I was able to carry through 9 and the way the car handled. Perfectly neutral. Very fun stuff.

What sort of times were you running there? Is a 1:48.xxx respectable for only my second weekend there running on last years Victoracers? I'd like to think it's a good time but really don't have anything to compare it to. It certainly felt quick.

I'm looking forward to Cayuga this year.

1.48.xx in a somewhat "prepped" car (I mean still street legal and all) is PRETTY respectable. Ya, 8,9,10 are really fun as well. You can certainly carry alot of speed through there. IF you ever get a chance to go to the track at Mont Tremblant in Quebec, you will have another favorite track. TRUST ME. Sorry things didn't quite work out with Yoshio. Crap happens all the time. Now you have me worried for our race car with the GTi-R. Yoshio's supposed to tune it at the end of July. Turn 2 can be tricky and You are catching on. all the veterans single apex it, IF they get the car set up right at the crest of the hill. Little hint (you probably found this out already, but a slight tap at the brakes at the top of the hill to settle the car usually allows you to just zoom through two.

I heard that. We were scheduled to run there last year but Tommy Hilfinger decided he wanted the track for himself that same weekend and we were told we couldn't run. Turned out to be a big stink because the local hotels refused to give us our deposits back. Exactly. I finished my braking right before the drop, back on the gas and stayed mid track until about halfway through then cut it to the apex at the bottom. As the day went on I was braking less at the top but it's a scary turn if you don't have your wits about you.

Jim its nice to hear you had a good time.

James told me about it when I met up with him in Shannonville saturday.

The one thing that sucks about Mont-Tremblant is its availability.
Its so hard to get some time on that track its not funny.
If your not a porche/viper etc.. club its basicaly impossible.

Only other times you can get on there is if you run Sedan GT/GTO here in Quebec.

That's just the thing. I run with Trackmasters and they had MTB booked last year but Hilfinger fu*ked us.

I do not believe these great claims of power. Please bring your car to Summit Point this weekend so I can drive it.

Trackmasters will be at SP Oct 28-29. I was there last year but it's my least favorite of all the tracks I've run, not to mention the 7 hour drive home sucks. Come to the Glen this summer and I'll toss you the keys.

"Come to the Glen this summer and I'll toss you the keys."

Oh boy, maybe I should plan a trip down there myself

Hmm, if I get ya some time on MTB, will ya toss me the keys ?

Im not sure about this summer. But Ive been talking with some organisers of different events here in Quebec, and we are trying to do something about getting a full day at MTB. We have lots of PR and work to do. But if it works out, I'll let you know in advance.

Absolutely. You get me track time at MTB and let me crash at your place and the keys are yours for a 30 minute session.

That would be great. Keep me posted. I hear the scenery in MTB is beautiful.

Jim:

It's good to hear that your car is running in good shape. You said your car put down 181 whp, I'm just wondering what mods do you have on your VE? I looked at your profile and looked at your web page but I couldn't find any info. Thanks.

BTW, have you thought about taking your car to the drag strip? Later.

The motor has a Fujitsubo SS header, Greddy cat back exhaust, HS CAI, JWT ECU and NGK Iridum plugs. It also has a UR water pump pulley but I doubt that offers any hp gains.

I really have no interest in taking it to the drags.
