SR16VE 5spd Tranny Question

I finally swapped my SR20VE into my N15 Pulsar. I am using a normal SR20DE 5spd NON LSD, i find my first 2 gears feel great. When i shift to 3rd gear car falls flat on it face until 3rd gear really gets back upstairs.

I sourced a SR16VE gearbox LSD, but in a previous thread i was reading a guy mentioned he does not like how the SR16VE LSD falls off in 3rd gear.

My question is to anyone that is using the SR16VE tranny on the SR20VE does it really fall off that much or at all?

I got a pull in a buddy of mine SR20 Primera P10 with a N15 Pulsar GTI SR18DE LSD box and the gear ratios on this box are crazy. Car accelerates like .

Will the SR16Ve box solve my problems?

I have a friend which is running 20VE +16VE cam + 16VE gearbox
After tuning it and preset the cam switching time on dyno
To get the best timing is reving the engine to 8500 rpm before you shift up
so on every gear, the rpm is exactly where the exhaust cam opening time
so the powerband is not flatten

Hi Omaritech u r the guy that i have see on some evenings with the green n15 pulsar that uses to drive a G20 P11? If so we can hook up and compare how the gear boxes feel because i have a non lsd 5 speed box in my car and the third gear is ok. But if u can source a SR16 LSD box u should, my car had a auto tranny with lsd compare to a manual with no lsd auto win easy the car is so different to drive now. call me 260-1800

If your VE is stock, the 16ve tranny is not too bad. Once you start to mod your engine and getting closer to 200whp, the tranny starts to hurt you. I would smoke 1-2 and chirp third. As for falling off in 3rd, no its 4th. Once you shift into 4th gear it puts you so low in your power band its just holding you off.

Let me ask, how do u guys deal with the weakness in the SE-R/Sunny/pulsar 5 speed gear box?

I've broken 3rd gear twice in one year using those box in a turbo bluebird. Will be embarking on a sr20ve project and wants to solve this issue

I think what they meant by there SR16VE tranny falling of in third has to do with how rediculious 1st and 2nd are in that tranny. 3rd is normal (much closer to a stock 5 speed tranny) so it feels slow or after all the pull in first and 2nd.

I have a B15 LSD SE tranny and I hear that the gearing ratios are the same as the SR16VEs but that the B15 tranny is much stronger.

Someoneelse said that if you get a VE and mod it to like 200HP that a SR16VE tranny may hurt you. I don't own a VE but I may have to agree with that. My de is modded with still stock cams and I make 138 ft lbs torque and 150HP to the wheels and if I dont have my suspension set right I will peal big time in first.

There are ways to address this though even as you get more HP. ( obviously there is a limit ) Motor mounts, suspension, and knowing how to launch. I know I love the out of the whole acceleration I get from my B15 tranny. I plan to go VE and get close to 200 WHP from it so I my be dealing with this traction issue in the near future. Ultimately if you are looking for top end speed and balance for a VE I think you will want a P11 tranny. Most P11 tranny guys are turbo guess and most B15 tranny guys are NA. Anyone else running these trannys? What is your 0.02?

Omaritech,

I have the SR20DE with LSD in the B11 Sunny. To first give you some info as to what is happened with my rallycar...the first, second and third are equally spaced(one builds on the other and gradually reduce the acceleration), so I get exactly what you mean about third not being quite as nice as 1st and 2nd, however after adding the 4.44 final drive, the second and third were much better. However 1st disappeared. It is over too quickly. With the SR16VE the 1st, 2nd and 3rd are slightly shorter giving about a 4km diff. between each gear if you were to use a 4.44 final drive in the SR20DE box....4th and 5th are the same in both the SR16VE and SR20DE LSD boxes. Basically, there is only a slight gain in terms of "push" by going to that box as compared to a the SR20De with the 4.44final drive. It will however feel really different to a std SR20DE.
Hope that helps you with making a decision.
Regards,
Ron
