I've been running my VE for a while now and I'm not sure I've got the timing right. I've read people have timing set between 5 degrees to over 20 degrees depending on the set-up they have.
I'm running is SR20VE engine, SR16VE cams, SR16VE ecu & Neo AFC (which not doing anything, except monitoring at the moment). My timing is currently set at 15 degrees.
So the qustion is, what timing are you running on what set up?
I had my ve on ve ecu on 5deg, then bumped it to 9deg and gained 5hp all across the power band, then bumped it to 13deg and did not gain anything above the 9deg setting, so I lowered it back to 9deg.
Every engine is different, but when my VE was bone stock, I gained a lot of torque and made best power at 19* btdc. I would put her on a dyno and really see what she can do.

speaking to Calum on the matter, VE's loveeeeeee timing. The key is to find your MBT or Minimum Best Timing, similar to what TheSnail did. It will be different for all set-ups (specially with different ECUs) but will be more than you think.

The JWT programs have too little timing in a lot of their maps. I am currently running 87 octane and 20psi of boost on a gt28rs stock DET with 550cc inj and z32 maf program. No detonation. It really depends on where you live and what tune you have. The JWT tunes are built to not burn the house down. So they are very conservative.
Massive variation cross the motors. Mines turning out good power, but feels like she's laking touque at the bottom end.
I think I'll get the cam switch positions adjusted then put her back on a dyno to adjust the timing and A/F ratios...
it all depends on what ecu your running. i know my car with sr16 cams made the most power at 15degrees. this was for a total of 32degrees of advance on the top end.
