HELP: BROKEN TIMING CHAIN

dear all forumer
i have a new problem with my new sr16 ve....
the timing chain had broke and swap mostly all the valves...
does **** here faced the same prob like mine **?why?how?

fyi, i did n replaced a lot of upgrade for this motor including the stroker n crank, stage4 kelford camshaft, e-manage, sr20det injektors...bla...bla...(like common conversion)

the motor run nicely with expected perfomance (at least) for almost a month until the chain broke suddenly without any repairs n been touched...

Did you shave the head or block a lot? It is possible the tensioner ran out of adjustment and couldn't keep the chain tight causing it to bounce around and fail.

Timing seldom break, even ur horse power increase much.
but anyhow u can buy a new 1 at tan chong price about $260 i just found out resonly.
intention to change my 1 but not in the end cause it still good.
did u use any adjustable cam pulley?
it maybe cause by that if u buy a non quality aftermarket part,
aluminium will wear off the chain easily

tq 4 reply...

i bought a used n15 halfcut mileage at 120k++km.
never reshape the block or head. *** port&polished with metal gasket and reshape the valve pocket.

yeah.the horsepower is not at my expectation as the torque since it's for drag purposal only.need very much torque to hit even 300m @ quarter mile.im using a custom made cam pulley (modify the oem).

1 more thing, my oem sr16ve piston was cracked for 2nd time with the same damaged.i guess it cant stand the c.r since upgraded stroker. (dont know how to calculate the c.r). if there any forged piston can suit this motor coz i'v looked around, there was no hi-compressed piston can suit this motor. or there other piston that i can modify to? perhaps it's below 89mm...

tq for ur kindnes.really need some1 who can explain technically to me y the chain broke, n the piston carcked...tq...

show pictures of the head, cams, came gears, chain tensioner and chain guide

Basically show pictures of everything
I am willing to bet there is an issue with your timing chain guide or came gears

Wait a minute, are you saying you're running sr16ve pistons with 89 mm stroke? That's a lot of compression!! Might explain why the motor blew up.

onyxeros, we hv dissambled the motor already...thank god there got no damaged at head, valves, even the tensional n cam pulley.i dont suspect the wrong installation n adjusment is the cause of broken chain since it run perfectly for a month without any repairs 0r setting adjustment ( run nicely when give heavy smoke to b16a/b...hahaha...)till nw, there's no answer yet.

5speed, its not the stroke but the bore (89mm)...im looking for forged piston with high-compressed, but negative.does anyone here could recommend me what piston can suit the motor nicely @ little modification only.

tq for the replies.hope we can keep on discuss these prob. the cracked oem psitons & the broken timing chain.

wan_b13gtir, So far I did not heard of any aftermarket high compression piston unless you are going for bigger bore using sr20de aftermarket piston and using gasket to play with your compression. Otherwise you can try coating your sr16ve piston to make ithem more bullet proof. It was justmy opinion.Thanks...

If i not mistaken JE and Tomei do have such piston u r looing for.....
a best option is the fuel octane.....can try on a higher octane fuel to have a better torque.
it can safe your piston from cracking

wan_b13gtir, try http://www.ceramicocoating.com/news.html. Their shop is in Sunway, Subang Jaya, Kuala Lumpur. Did you manage to find a replacement for your piston?

dear wan,
i m also running almost the same spec as yours.
now that your issue happens to be mine too, i dont think i want to have my 1mm shaved piston crack as well.
i am sourcing n doing some research on JE piston, as they custom made pistons for users.
please gimme a ring at +6012 720 3005, my name is Chew. we can work on it!

they give me rm 150 for top of the piston n rm150 for the side...so, rm300/piston...total, rm1200...im planning to get a set of 89mm...but still looking the most suitable 1...yes, we have almost the same setup...

chew, how do u shaved ur piston?...im also shaved it, but only at the valve pocket seems it hit the valve once (swap 8nos of valve)...but not shave the top of the piston since i need a very high compression...

bee14ve...v-power heh?...mmmm...

cmng, yeah...mine was cracked 2 times already....i think it cant stand the heat n pressure...the reading is outmeter of the pressure gauge(chamber compression test)...dont know what is ur reading...

no chew, i still dont get how u shave ur piston...

cmng, cam pulley?...its not a new make one....but used on other motor nicely before...same to the cam...maybe the tensioner...hmmm...need to investigate it properly...

chew, i would like to know how u shave ur piston.cmng, what is ur compression reading?...if yours is same to mine, wonder there is another problem...but, what it is?...hmmm...fyi, lot of knocking on my motor at low rpm...juz set the ignition at 5degree...too far from the 17(according to my tuner told me..hehehe...)....more higher, more knocking, more danger to the piston, rite?...why hah?...
