HOW TO: Trunk key doesn't work? Check inside

I've had my B13 for almost 5 years now, and the trunk key hole has never worked, and I even bought a new key cut from the key number from Nissan. I had an extra trunk lock from a friend's totaled car, and I decided to take it apart and see if I could figure it out. Once you remove the trunk lock, you need to remove the C clip holding the arm that pops the trunk latch.

Next, remove the cap that holds the lock cylinder in the holder. I put it in a bench vise and used a hammer and screw driver. Be careful not to bend this since you will need to put it back on.

Here is the lock cylinder. When you put the key in, the small brass pieces should be flush. The problem with mine, and the extra I had, was that some of the brass pieces were stuck. I sprayed it with WD40, but the middle ones were still stuck. I used a jewelers screw driver to move the sliders back and forth, and that freed them up.

Once the sliders are free and moving, put the cylinder back in and the lock should work. I used some grease for my bicycle suspension to keep everything lubed up. The lock cylinder only goes on 1 way, and the arm goes on 1 way also. I put the lock back in the trunk, and it worked. Hopefully this will help you use the trunk lock key again. It's alway been a pain to unlock the door to pop the trunk.

the brass pins can changed to fit your key too IMO, if you are on your second lock.

If the lock is just stuck due to rusting then I would try some PB Blaster to loosen it first. Wait a day and see if it works. If it does then spray it with some Tri-Flow (lockshops or Bike Shops should have it). You want to flush out the PB Blaster with Tri-Flow over several days I would think. Worth a shot before takine things apart as PB Blaster really works well on stuck things.

I tried everything, and it wou;dn't work. Maybe mine was more stuck than others, but if the PB Blaster doens't work, my way hopefully will help.

Good stuff, Eric. I'm going out to hit mine with PB first. If that doesn't work....your writeup will go into action.

I nominate this for permanency in the Tech File/How-To forum.

I bent my key hoping is was just the lock stuck. I am so happy to be able to open the trunk from the outside. It sucked having something heavy to put in the trunk, and have to put it on the ground, open the door, pop the trunk, then put it in the trunk. I find myself using the key, because I can now.

Just goes to show you need to spray your locks yearly with Tri-Flow to avoid this mess in the long run.

My trunk lock never worked. We removed that carpeting crap that covers the trunk lock and found out that the metal rods that go into the lock cylinder were out of alighment so I stuck them back into the cylinder correctly and voila! it worked.

My problem is that the little sliver that covers the internals of the lock from the outside is stuck in the open position so everything inside is gunked up! The thread has given me the inspiration to do something about it! Who cares that my car has a MIL for the O2 sensor, needs to be inspected, needs the AC fixed, needs the struts fixed to allow for more ride height, and 15 dozen other things... I'm doing this first

i tried spraying it. It works for a while, but i think in the end, you may have to just open it up. I have a bad trunk and a passenger side door. I never thought the door was ***** be a problem. But now, i realize that i wish it worked. For some reason, i dont picture the door one being all that awesome to get at.

Can't be hard...I'll just take em a loose and see what's ailing them.

I just fixed my driver door. I had to do the same, reach out and unlock it. Turns out the screws that hold the lock in place were loose and one was missing. I tightened them up, and the lock doesnt move now when you use the inside door handle - opens perfectly. Next up - new hinges.

Just so you guys know....Most locksmiths will tell you it is not a good idea to use oils like WD-40 in locks, it will attract dirt and eventually your locks will get all gunked up again. The recommended lubricant for use in locks is powdered graphite. This is usually avalible at any hardware store. hope this helps! Nik~

The trunk lock in our G has never worked with the key...........Until today! I just happened to have a can of pb blaster sitting on my shelf and as I walked by it jogged my memory of Steve's tip when I went to grab something from the trunk. A little squirt of that and viola a working lock! I'll lube it up well with powered graphite in a few days.

Great and useful post, thanks eric96ser. To the fellow novices out there, the trunk lock comes out of the trunk from behind the black plastic mask on the outside of the trunk deck. To do this, take out the two 10mm bolts around the lock, the six 8mm nuts that hold the black plastic mask to the metal lid, and the licence plate. For some reason, I still had to wiggle the trunk lock out between the metal lid and the plastic mask because the black plastic was still being held on by some unseen attachment point near the center of the licence plate mount. After following eric96ser's post, today is the first time in 5 years my car's trunk key has actually worked! Now to attack that noisy starter...

one key should open everything.....unless it's a "valet" key. valet keys don't work on glove boxes or trunks. So maybe thats the problem, although I have no idea if b13s even came with valet keys. I got my nx over 10 years after it was new and I only got the one key with it that worked on all the locks. Just a thought...

I've tried to get the protective piece of metal onto the pressure spring and into the lock cylinder for the past hour because they fell out, and I can't get it!!! Any tips?

NEVERMIND. I got it all done, and now my lock is sweet! It works! Here's a picture of why it doesnt work.

here's why it wasn't working though.

(Back from the dead)

HA I've been looking for this, saw it a while ago...

Well I've got a 98 with the security system in it... and my trunk and drivers side door tumblers are completely useless... gotta get in with passenger side door ( no key fob either )

I wonder if I'll be able to do this with the tumblers seeing as they have electrical connectors on them. I will let you all know when I get to it...

I did go to Nissan today and found out that a new drivers side tumber is $77.00!!!!
