HOW TO: 370cc injector install

Compliments of Saaby

I love step-by-step guides on installing car parts. Unfortunately I could not find any on replacing stock injectors with 370cc injectors on a low port sr20de. So I decided to write my own after I successfully replaced mine.

1. Start the car and after a few seconds, pull the fuel pump fuse (15Amp). On a 99 SE-L it is the fuse in the 4th row down and in the 2nd column. The car will sputter and die. After the car shuts off, crank the car over 3-4 times to releave pressure in the system. Then, remove the gas cap to relieve even more pressure.

2. Disconnect negative battery cable.

3. Remove the intake piping to the throttle body. Remove only as much as needed to get the throttle body free.

4. Remove the throttle body from the intake manifold (4 huge allen screws) and REPLACE the gasket that goes between the throttle body and the intake manifold.

5. Disconnect the 2 throttle cables (pedal and cruise) from the butterflies attached to the throttle body.

6. Remove the bracket that attaches the throttle cables to the upper intake manifold (2 bolts).

7. Remove the bolt that is attached to the bracket that is below the throttle body. This bracket is attached to the upper intake manifold which we are trying to move out of the way.

8. Remove the 2 brackets that secure the upper intake manifold to the block, just below the valve cover (2 bolts each).

9. Remove the 3 bolts and 2 nuts that attach the upper intake manifold to the lower intake manifold. On a 98 and later with all the emissions equipment on top of the intake manifold, the EVAP purge valve might have to be unbolted to get to one of the bolts. Some vacuum lines might need to be disconnected to get to the other bolts.

10. Disconnect just enough vacuum lines to be able to lift the upper intake manifold up and back towards the firewall. Sensors should not need to be disconnected!

11. Disconnect the injector harness clips. The injectors are now accessible. A pair of Vice Grips will most likely be needed to brake the injector cap screws loose. A pair of needle nose Vice Grips is highly recommended. Gently grip the screws by the tip of the vice grip and slowly turn the screw loose. When it brakes loose, use a screw driver to remove the screw. After removing the screws, the injector caps will be free to remove. Note that each injector cap has a tiny bushing that sits FREELY between it and the injector. Do not drop this bushing as it is easily lost in the engine crevisces.

12. Remove the injectors by using a rubber mallet and a BIG flat head screw driver. Here is how. Place the flat head screw driver between the injector clip electrical connector and the fuel rail. Tap the screw driver gently with the rubber mallet to wedge the screw driver in a little. Then leverage the screw driver on the valve cover and tap it gently and fairly hard to force the injector out of the fuel rail. Use controlled taps.

13. Install NEW O-rings on the 370cc injectors (both small and large O-rings). Rub clean motor oil on the O-rings. This will lessen the effort it takes to install the injectors into the fuel rail.

14. Force the injectors into the fuel rail by turning the injector clockwise and counter-clockwise back and forth while pressing it into the fuel rail. The body of the injector should be flush with the fuel rail surface indicating the injector is seated properly. If the injector can be pulled out with relatively no effort, it is NOT INSTALLED PROPERLY.

15. Replace the injector caps and clips. It is highly recommended that the stock cap screws that were removed, be replaced with Allen screws of the same dimension (m5 0.8 16).

16. Reassemble everything that was disassembled in reverse order.

I must add that Rittmeister (Kent Stine) definitely contributed to this guide. I learned the idea of replacing the stock cap screws with Allen screws from him.
