I'm confused - a rather thorough test I recently read showed purolator filters to be fairly decent. The # for lowports and highports is L14477 (that's from memory, but I think it's right). The numbers for ALL the other aftermarket filters in one of the fit books is the same for hihgport ('93 & earlier) and lowport ('94 and later). So are all the aftermarket filters responsible for blowing up hundreds of lowports, or are they using the lowport filter on highport motors? Is there some smoke floating around here or have the aftermarket boys just made a filter compatible with both motors?
Another interesting piece of info is that Honda makes some filters that fit. A good friend works at the Honda dealer, and they get G20's, etc in for oil changes and they just use OEM Honda filters (since they are in stock). I'm not sure what the filter is for, but it is out there. So just a FYI if you change your oil at the Honda dealer and don't have a filter.

i work at valvoline and change oil all day. bit of info:
hondas-vo39, vo50, vo54
nissans-vo33, vo40, vo50, vo 54
hyundai-vo39 maybe others(who really cares bout hyundai)
acura-vo39, vo50, vo54
mitsu-vo25, vo 39
the 33's are for the 1.6 the 40's are for the 2.0 the 50's are for the 2.4 and the 54's are for the maximas and stuff. i looked into this cause i thaught the b13 woulda taken a vo50 but the book said vo40. so to did deeper and wonder why, another book said that in the 40 some valve is opened at 13psi and the 50 is 14psi. whatever that means. a whole crapload of filters will interchange with each other where threads and gaskets are concerned, but whatever valve this is in the filter is the difference.

1. So, from you information NO Honda filter fits an SR20DE, right? No 40 on the Honda lsit...
2. I DO CARE About Hyundai!!! I do not know what happens in the States but... over here there are no Valvoline filters AND Hyundai OEM filters are 1/2 the price of Honda/Nisaan OEM filters!
well i got fired the other day. the boss didnt like the ultimatim i gave him but i did get some last info....sorry for the hyundai comment. they also take some 54's.
but we had a huge filter reference guide that translated all filter #'s to all cars. so if you really want to know just call somewhere and ask i.e. lube shop. or try to get your hands on that guide.
I use a 9E000 on my SR20E. I have since my first oil change. I know that Nissan issued an TSB saying that some early SE SR20 motors could use the 9E000, but they were not sure which ones so it is recommended that everyone use the 65F00. Interestingly my sister's 96 Maxima uses the same oil filter, front and rear brake pads, and I believe front and rear calipers as my car. Well at least before I put the 13" Brembo kit on.
I have used the Purolator PureOne model that he mentions (PL14476), and I liked it. The case is a bit wider and longer than the typical sr20 filter (it rubs a bit on the drain tube funnel when you install, it's a tight fit but it goes), and it seems to filter very well. I have been trying a few different filters lately, I liked the purolator better than the bosch premium (also a good filter though), I have a nissan filter on there right now. Probably going back to Purolator for the next change, especially if I see them for a dollar off at Advance Auto again.

I like the valvoline filters on mine..forget the part number right now...but a buddy of mine who has built 4 cylinders since the 70s and swears by them. He says it has something in there that the frams dont have. Something to with starvation i guess..i have a hi-port

And, I don't mind at all being looked down upon by purists. Indeed I don't mind at all being looked down upon by those whom I do not look up to at all. -
Yes, it is called an anti-drainback valve. It keeps some oil in the filter so when you start your motor up it doesn't have to reprime the whole system. Basically similar to filling your oil filter with oil when doing an oil change. Also Fram glues their oil filters together, that glue can come apart and get into the motor. At least two 5.0 Mustanks have lost their motors according to this site I found.
I don't think the oil filter has anything to do with the engine being hig port or low port. It has to do with what year the engine was made. I believe '91 - '94 use the long filter, and '95 and up use the short one. My '94 SE-R used the long filter and it's a lowport. My '98 Avenir (high port), which is now in my '94 SE-R, uses the same short filter as my '99 SEL (low port).
91 - 93's are hig port, and 94's are low port, but they all use the same filter.
I use fram I always use them just for the grip so I can get the bastards back off. I've only recently started reading about the problems with them, in the last 3 months. Although I've never had a problem, I'll be going to something else on my next oil change

I think it has more to do with the chassis than the motor. This is to prevent monkeys from seeing a sentra, and just grabbing any filter that matches the body style.
The JDM SR20s I get (all newer than 1995) have used 53J oil filters.

Don't tighten them so much!
If it's a problem, I use the oil filter sockets, which only fit Fram style filters. To use them with your OEM filter, just put a thin rag over the filter, then put the socket on.
If that doesn't work, then I use the dreaded screwdriver method.
So you guys are telling me that no one else has the oil pressure light come on during startup? The system has to have some time where it is not up to the right oil pressure. On mine, I'll start the engine, it'll rev to like 1500 or so, and then the oil light will go off. I'm figuring this is normal but I'm confused why no one else said this happens to them. I have a JDM highport in my Classic that I always use the Nissan -65FOO filter on as that's the one that fits. The '91-'94 SR filter doesn't fit.

Drive it like you stole it (or at least try to before it breaks)
That sounds the same as mine. Cold starts idle higher. But if the light doesn't go off within the first second or two, then I'd say its time to start checking the oil system for problems.

That's normal. My B13 and B14 do the same thing. Oil press light stays on for about 2 seconds during cold starup then it goes off. It goes off quicker during warm startups. I did noticed that the light in my wife's '03 pathfinder goes off really quick even during cold star ups. Different kind of pump I guess. I wouldn't worry unless the light comes on after the engine has been running for more than a few seconds.
what's the opinion on the k&n oil filter? my buddy was changing the oil on his r1, and the k&n filter on there had a big allen wrench socket/hole thing on the end of it. it would be super easy to get loose.
