Are you tired of that wall clock tach with shift light? Are you tired of being blinded by that shift light? Looking for a low profile shift light to add to that sleeper theme? Well this is just for you. This thread will tell you how to install a shift light here, that is if you dont have abs or you can place it anywhere you please:
Now after sounding like an infomercial here is the how to.
First thing you need to do is remove the instrument cluster which you can find information on how to do this here: http://www.sr20forum.com/showthread.php?t=90073
now what you need to do is remove the bulb socket that goes in the abs slot if there is one or revove the bulb socket that goes in the location you want the shift light. Now remove the bulb. It should look like this with the bulb removed:
Now bend metal prongs up with a needle nose pliars so it will look like this:
With a razor blade cut the plastic that is underneath those tabs and bend the tabs over so it will look like this when you done:
With a soldering iron solder a wire about three feet long onto both tabs.Put that aside. Now get your tach and shift light.
I did mine with an autometer. On the tach cut the wires that lead to the shift light. You wont need the shift light anymore so toss it unless you have some other use for it. It will look like this when its done:
Find a concealed mounting location for the tach itself. I mounted mine here:
Wire up the tach as directed by autometer or the tach manufaturer.
Re install the light socket back into the instrument cluster before you do, put some kind of rubber insulation or electrical tape over the parts you soldered to keep from contacting other circuits. Re install the instrument cluster and run the wires from the bulb socket down to the tach and solder those wires to the two wires you cut that orginally went to the shift light, electrical tape them up. Set your tach to your desired shift setting put your interior back together and enjoy!
For those of you concerned about visibility you can see it perfectly during the day, you will see the light in your peripheral vision if your looking for it. You can also use just a shift light instead of a shift light and tach I just already had the tach and shift light.

I like the idea ALLOT. I'm sure he just used the tach because he had it laying around.
XxToKeSxX - You can do it just by purchasing an msd rpm switch and wiring it into a bulb.

thank you im glad someone who can read and somone with brains can see what i was doing, its funny how it was a great idea when I showed it off before you assholes.
i like it, not the tach that is but the shift light in the dash. i allways wondered what that light space was for (dont have abs) and even thought that if i ever got a shift light only (no tach) i would try and put it there!
You can also use just a shift light instead of a shift light and tach I just already had the tach and shift light.
Yes... I get to use it
You should put that in bold though, Since its at the bottom, its kind of hard to see... Plus lots of people like to skim posts with directions. Just a misunderstanding...
Peace,

I was just being brutally honest. Burying a huge tach in your dash so you can have a shift light just isn't the best way to go about this nor the most cost effective. You can get a shift light off of eBay for like $20 and that'd be cheaper and a smaller device to modify for this purpose. Now, let's say the tach was free, then you might want to dismantle the thing and figure out a way to eliminate everything but the circuit board so you can use that to trigger the light and not have to bury the whole thing in your dash. However, if you have no problem with burying large redundant objects in your dash, then by all means, do what you've done. It's certainly the easy way, just not the best.
if you have time to make digital art, post it here
if you have some graphix , fonts, ideas, that you don't have time to illustrate, post it here
and beeee veeeeerrrry
hey, don't forget the bonus for actually taking the time to do a write-up, guys...
FWIW, sometimes ya gotta do what ya can, with what ya got, right? ///H

Um yes I already had it lying around as was stated in the write up, and who cares what space it takes up it really is no different than mounting the damn thing on your dash it still takes up space, but its taking up space i will never see or use. Taking it apart would have been a little tricky seeing as how you need the tach to set the shift light. You can pick it apart as you like but other people who have a big ass shift light and tach who do not want to spend the money to get another shift light like me can benefit from the write up. It also shows pretty much how you can do it with just a shift light, its not the materials you use really just the concept itself.
