Someone has to post the marks correctly. Many of my people with SR20's have 6 timing marks. I hope the correct order is -5, 0, 5, 10, 15, 20 because I am going to do it right now to 19*.

If you have a dial back timing light you can easily check each mark to see what it's true timing # is.

I have an old Sears timing light so all I can go by is the timing marks on the pulley. Works though!

It's necessary to note that not all SR20 crank snouts are marked the same. The pulley on my '94 G20 doesn't even match the marks in the FSM.

So 19 should be the max I would run on 91 octane? Will have all basic boltons except for header.

Well, you can run up to 22 or 24° without fear of knock, but you won't make any more power than with 19°. You'll actually make less.

And get a header.

I have 19* timing with a full WAI and 2.5'' exhaust piping and it really woke the car up. It seems like the car never stops pulling.

too bad I'm having idle issues... maybe I should get the car tuned first, then worry about the timing eh?

This whole "idle at 750-1500 whenever the hell I feel like it, with no rhyme or reason" thing is starting to get really old.

Not on the forum much lately since neck injury - we'll be back at it soon, babying the n00bies.

JWT S4, HS 6, Home Depot Intake, Hypercoil 2s w/ KYB "GR-Poo", CF Sunroof Delete panel, and other crap - where's my interior?

i'd imagine it would give the air/fuel mixture longer burn time, thus creating more power

Yup: earlier BANG = more POW!! Cheapest way to wring out a few more horses from your 4 (if you don't mind runnin' premium, that is)! Could theoretically improve efficiency as well by allowing more time for the fuel to burn more completely, though the more "spirited" driving that is traditionally associated w/more power should offset that a bit

i changed my idle the other day to 1k flat and after i turned the car off it went back to normal...is there a trink to make it stay there forever?
and if you retard your timing do you get any benefits?

You can't set the idle that high, I don't think. The computer is only supposed to let it idle in a 100 RPM window (±50 RPM) around a target speed (750-800, depending on model, year, and transmission).

There are three advantages to retarded timing; lower NOx emissions (good in a SMOG state for passing the sniffer test), better idle, and compensation for poor gasoline. But if you're not driving around in Jaurez, the rest of your emissions system is clean (EGR, BPT), and your timing is set to 15° (or even 17° in most cases), there's no reason to worry about knock.
