From the 1991 Technical Bulletins, Beginning with April 1991 production,
the ignition timing mating mark has been changed as shown below.
NEW marks at 0,5,10,13,white paint,15,20 B.T.D.C..
OLD marks at 0,5,10,15,20 B.T.D.C..
My car was manufactured prior to 1991, but I have six timing marks, not five. Most folks agree that the final mark should be 20 BTDC. When using the timing light, you'll see a short post above the pulley, this is your guide.
It is important to make sure that your idle speed is correct before beginning the adjustment.
Connect your timing light to plug 1 (closest to the passenger side of the car).
Start the engine, and loosen the distributor cap.
Check your timing, you want to be just under half way between the last and 2nd last marks (15/20).
Tighten the distributor once you've set the timing to 17 DTDC.
Dont you have to do some kind of rain dance to get into Timing Mode? Warm the engine, hold the rpm's at around 2k for 2 minutes, race the engine a few times, shut it off, disconnect TPS, start up and race the engine again to get it in 'Timing Mode'? Or can you just adjust the timing as long as the idle is right and the engine is warm.
The timing marks for b14 are as follows:
-5,0,5,10,13,white paint,15,20

to adjust your timing you first need to disconnect the throttle positioning sensor first with the car off then start the car and align your marks by rotating the distributor. if you do not unplug the tps you will not be in a base timing mode.
ugh i was just reading actually thinking of advancing the timing on the nx, and was reading a very good write up on g20.net last night. im sure this will help guys. http://www.g20.net/forum/showthread....threadid=13470
mickeyj: You don't adjust electronic advance. That's all handled inside the ECU. By adjusting the mechanical advance, you forcibly add or subtract from the electronic advance because the ECU assumes that you set mechanical at 15°, whether you set it there or not.
STRATTON: That's the same writeup that I referenced above. I appreciate the complements.
Play with it. You have to rotate the distributer pretty far and pretty hard to do any damage. Stop talking...just do. Make a change, check the result, make another change.
When I advanced my timing from 15* to 19* the idle stayed at 750 rpms

Do you tap the throttle 3x past 3K RPMs or hold the throttle a bit 3x at 3K RPMs?

This would lead me to believe that (as Rawk said) you didn't do the proceedure as I wrote it, or you're not trying hard enough. Remember, kids, if you want to go faster, you have to squeeze the long, skinny pedal on the right...

LOL...Dude, I quoted you because I was trying to get your attention. I am actually asking if you tap the throttle 3x past 3K RPMs or hold the throttle a bit 3x at 3K RPMs? I'm asking you because you seem to know this
Ohhh...sorry. Engine warm, car's resting but running; give the pedal or butterfly a good, solid blip (say, 50% travel or so) until the RPM breaks the 3k mark. Let off, allow it to return to idle (fall under 1000), and repeat two more times. Don't let it idle for too long; the three blips have to take place in less than 3 seconds. It's not voodoo or ballet, but I understand your question.
