Just to confirm: Andreas is absolutely correct. The reason your chain is rattling on that guide is because your tensioner is allowing more slack than it used to.

Think of it as a bad tensioner indicator. Hell, leave it in place with the new tensioner. With a fresh tensioner, it shouldn't hit that guide at all anyway, so it's extra insurance.

SO when replacing the tensioner VC is obviously off and simply loosen the bolts holding it in but find a way too keep your cams and chain in same posistion so not that hard too do then right??

I'll jump in and help ya anyway. VC doesn't need to come off for the tensioner. I did have to take the oil filter off though as the tensioner is right underneath it.

from my experience, i had some rattling on my jdm motor when i first got it, very lightly though, ordered a new tensioner with my s3's and wallah, rattle gone, the guide is there as a protection and kind of like a reminder of when the tensioner is going out.

Same thing on the jdm i put in on my current se-r, sometimes i can hear a very faint rattle at idle only and only sometimes. but i havent changed it yet. ordered the new one today matter fact. and it will go in with the s4's and nice white powerdercoated valve cover in a couple weeks along with the turbo kit. haha

so yeah its just a precautionary thing and i would personally leave it in.

I think this is a good place to ask about my issue. I have a '93 SER with about 170K miles. I decided to replace my T.C. tensioner with the new style one because I noticed some slight rattling until it warmed up and because it is the original tensioner. So I took the old one out, compressed and put the hook on the new one and installed it. I then took the valve cover off and released the hook on it and put everything back together. I cranked it a few seconds without the coil wire on to get the oil to get through there. I then started it and it started and ran fine. The only thing I noticed is that even after it was fully warm it seemed to make a sound as though the chain is slightly touching the upper chain guide at idle. When I revved it it sounded fine but at idle it keeps sounding like it is just touching the chain guide. Should I just remove the chain guide and forget about it or is there something else going on here? Thanks very much.
