I wasn't talking about rustoleum from a spray can. I was talking about having a compressor and spray gun and putting rustoleum primer in it. It's fairly cheap and all the stuff I've ever primed with rusty metal primer have lasted quite a while. That stuff sticks to everything.
I see. Well unless the rustoleum has reducing ratios on the can, you take a risk thinning it yourself so that it will flow through a gun. If you're confident in your ability to thin it, then go for it. Although I'd use a sealer over the top of it before you shoot a color coat on.
I'd go larger. You need lots of available air because each time the compressor runs, your air pressure will fluctuate and that compressed air is hot, and holds moisture, which you don't want coming out of the end of your gun, and a dessicant drier won't cut it. You can coil up some of your air hose in a bucket of ice water to try and cool the air, then the water will stay in that section of hose.
i work at a body shop in newark, ohio and i do alot of airbrushing and we use this paint its called auto air color its a water base paint you spray it on it looks dry when u spray but if you take a heat gun and go over the paint it drys completely in like 5 to 10 mins its a pretty good paint. and if you screw up a little piece alls you have to do is wipe it off!lol and just spray again. here is a web site for this stuff www.auto-air colors.com a cool site
so i can use rattle can primer to prime pretty much everything? bare metal, fillers, and painted surfaces. do i need to sand the first coat of primer before applying the second?

I hope you arent planning on spraying your car with that rattle-can paint.

you shouldnt have any problems with using the rattle can for primer. it is a good idea to sand inbetween coats with a wet finer sand paper. it will make a difference with the final coats
