I see. Well unless the rustoleum has reducing ratios on the can, you take a risk thinning it yourself so that it will flow through a gun. If you're confident in your ability to thin it, then go for it. Although I'd use a sealer over the top of it before you shoot a color coat on.

On paint, any brand suggestions?
I'd go larger. You need lots of available air because each time the compressor runs, your air pressure will fluctuate and that compressed air is hot, and holds moisture, which you don't want coming out of the end of your gun, and a dessicant drier won't cut it. You can coil up some of your air hose in a bucket of ice water to try and cool the air, then the water will stay in that section of hose.

you shouldnt have any problems with using the rattle can for primer. it is a good idea to sand inbetween coats with a wet finer sand paper. it will make a difference with the final coats

You can use the rattle can primer, but if it's a large area it'd be cheaper to buy a gun and paint to shoot it with and you'll do a better job.

to do a full paint job you need about a gallon.
if you are changing the color painting the doors, jambs, engine bay etc.
you will need more but i doubt you would need more than 1 and a half gallons, hell even if that is too much you will have some left overs for future repairs.

its better that you buy a little too much first than have to stop half way through to go buy more.
this is what i do for a living by the way
