annoying squel?

Hey, I just picked up a 95 SE-R and I have an annoying squel only at cold startup. Is that the starter squel or maybe the belts or something else? Thanks!

Check out the belts 1st.
Or have someone outside the car with the hood open when you first start it and see if they can pin point the squel...

James -

It could be either the belts or the started. If I recall correctly, the starter squeals when you release the key and it springs back from the "Start" position to the "On" position. It only lasts for a second or two. Belt squeal will last longer and increase with engine speed until the belts warm up enough to gain traction. Maybe this will help you figure it out.

If not, get some spray on belt dressing and see if that helps the problem. If so, then it's the belts, not the starter (obviously). Inspect them, find the loose or deteriorated one and toghten/replace as needed. You will probably want to remove he right front wheel and wheel well liner to inspect the belts.

Good luck,

Bill

Mine's doing the same thing to. Only on days it's really cold. 147K miles it's kinda normal for older starters.

Thanks Bill and Nostrodomas. It sounds like I have the starter squel since it occurs just like Bill described, just as I'm releasing the key and only for a couple seconds. Thanks again, now I just need to get to work on it!

I just did mine a few weeks ago. It worked like a charm.
The biggest PITA about the whole job was that my car is a 98 and I have that damn V intake manifold bracket. I wrestled with that bitch for an hour or two, but finally got it out.
Once you get the starter out its cake. Just get some good greese open up the back of the stater with the two long bolts and pack the reduction gears as much as you can. Reinstall and its done.

Chances are if it squeals on startup its your starter...

Don't worry about overpacking the grease in there as there is a "overflow" hole built into the side of the starter. If you have a hitiachi, this procedure is Godsent...

Another tip... if you ever your hitiachi starter start to slow up during the cold months... keep an eye on it. If you notice you start to get small shocks often (not tributary from static) when you get out of the car... check your main ground wire behind the battery... My starter had been on its way out since my swap because mine was loose and I didn't know it... That thing fried but it was quiet as a mouse

I had to replace it a couple weeks ago in my friend's driveway... (1-2 hour job if that) Now I'm rockin the Mitsu starter I got from my homie and all is good... Plus no more shocks!

I'm going to have to check into this! Can it be done with the car on ramps? Or do the wheels need to be dangling?

You really need to elevate the front of the car,
The higher you get the car the easier it is to get to the starter.

Hi guys,

Im a noob, not to the modding word but just to this model B13.

I have always had Hondas before.

Anyways guy’s im glad I came across this thread, very well put, and thanks for the pictures makes people like me doing something for the first time helpful. Im a white collar, so most people in my career path just buy new cars and soop them up, but I have love for old school cars, there is just something about them.

Anyways, im always learning something new, and I have recently come across a problem I just can't figure out.

about 3 weeks ago I started noticing the "crrrr" sound when starting the car, always thought it was my engine belt, so I waxed it with candle wax, and I still had this sound once in a while, but last three weeks it was there every time I started the car, and last 5 days I had this problem where I put in the key, and started it like I would normally with a smooth quick ignition start, but I noticed I would get the "crrr" and then dying feel, and when I would let go it would start and climb quickly back to its normal starting.

so I noticed this for 2 more days, I now had to crank really fast and not delay or hold the crank for the car to start, and the worst luck ever, I quit my job, pay for my university, and have little money left over that I use to close my over due accounts, and I blow 3 tires in two days and my car won't start.

Now living miles away from a mechanic I have no other transport and no money to burn for towing, diagnostics, and then labour and parts, this sucks living far out of the city I can't even get a job to walk to for a while I need 4 wheels, plus im going back to university full time already paid.

thinking it was my alternator I waited few days, and nothing the battery life is still there, and it can't be the distributor because the car still has life and can play the deck and wipers are all working properly so its not the battery either, there is one thing I hear though, when I keep the key in auxiliary mode, a click before start, I hear a "click clack" sound when I cranking, I herd “click clack” coming from the fuse box in the driver side bottom left corner, I put my finger on the fuses and I could feel this click clack vibration through my finger, I then tried reaching my arm in and doing the same, no engine noise.

Now im thing how the heck am I going to figure out if it’s an electrical fuse or a starter that’s died?

Thanks.
