Nissan W10 & W11 SR20DET Avenir Facts

There has been a lot of misinformation for many years concerning the W10 and W11 SR20DET Avenir motors. Many motors/turbos have been sold as W11 when they were actually W10. This wasn't a deliberate attempt by the seller to deceive the buyer, it was only out of the gross misinformation that's out there about these motors. I was very confused as well, so I went on a quest for the truth.

Searching many threads and over many days of research, I've uncovered a few facts about the Avenir and solved a few mysteries. I'm confident this information can be used as a good source for accurate information. Before you question the facts, check out my list of references.

FACTS:

- The Nissan Avenir that came with the SR20DET, was made between August 1995 - August 2002.
- The W10 Avenir SR20DET was produced from August 1995 - August 1998
- The W11 Avenir SR20DET was produced from August 1998 - August 2002
- The turbo number for the W10 Avenir SR20DET is 14411-1E001 and is journal bearing
- The turbo number for the W11 Avenir SR20DET is 14411-WA200('98-'00) & 14411-WF500('00-'02). They are both ball bearing
- The W10 Avenir SR20DET did NOT come with a ball bearing turbo
- The W11 Avenir SR20DET DID come with a ball bearing turbo
- The W10 Avenir came with a silver valve cover
- The W11 Avenir came with a silver valve cover
- Stock boost on a W10 is 7psi making 206hp (PSI not 100% confirmed)
- Stock boost on a W11 is 9psi making 227hp (PSI not 100% confirmed)

So what's this black valve cover W10 stuff about?!?: All W10/W11 Avenirs came with a silver valve cover. Some or all late model ('94-'95) U13 engines came with a black valve cover which is getting misrepresented as a W10 as late model engines share the same turbo. The '94 U13 blacktop came w/the older 1E000 turbo.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

SO YOU BOUGHT AN AVENIR....YOUR INFORMATION CONFLICTS WITH THE FACTS, WHAT DOES THAT MEAN?

- You didn't buy an Avenir.
- You got the model (W10/W11) confused.

WHAT SHOULD I BE LOOKING FOR WHEN I BUY AN AVENIR??

- A silver valve cover
- The turbo part # (14411-1E001 = W10 from '95-'98 || 14411-WA200 = W11 from '98-'00 || 14411-WF500 = W11 from '00-'02)
-- Here is a post showing the turbo # plate ID & a genuine W11 turbo: SR20 Forum - View Single Post - FS: W11 Avenir Ball Bearing Turbo Setup

ANY OTHER ADVICE/TIPS??

- W11 Avenirs use lowport oil filters

For the time being I will sticky this thread. Once enough information is collected, then it will be moved over to the technical library.

About time we nip this one in the butt

Can anyone cofirm the distributor part numbers are different? This could also diagnose freshly imported motors.

I had a SILVER OEM valve cover with turbo part number 14411-1E001 so that conflics with your facts.

Sombody like gregv could probably add to this. He could match up the part numbers for that black valve cover to the car it belongs on.

BLACK VALVE COVER FTW!

umm, reread what he posted, he posted it under the "still not 100% sure yet" regarding the VC color for the W10...

The Avenir motor that I bought came with the 14411-1E001 turbo and had a silver VC. Also the ECU that came with it had "W10" written on it.

Actually, it fits perfectly with the facts. Your post just confirms my belief that a W10 black top Avenir never existed. I've since reworded that part of my post to make it clearer what I am trying to say. I may just go ahead and change that to a fact. I think all these black top rumors are actually of late model U13 motors or something else. The W10 Avenir and late model U13 would have been out around the same time. Check my last two references from the pulsar forums about that.

Both you and McCoy had an authentic W10 Avenir.

I think it's more about which Avenirs came w/a ball bearing turbo above anything else. This is mainly where all the misinformation and confusion comes into play. It also signifies whether or not it is a W10 or W11.

And we get posts like these all the time due to the confusion: http://www.sr20forum.com/buying-sell...0-what-do.html

http://www.sr20forum.com/turbo/18683...questions.html

These posts are all over the boards. Just do a search for one of the turbo part numbers and see what comes up.

The information about all W11 Avenirs having a ball bearing turbo comes straight from Nissan's official websites about the W11 Avenirs. All SR20DET motors from 98 - 2002 are listed as 227hp(230ps) and the W11 Avenir page that debuted in 1998 even talks about the SR20DET using the word ball bearing. All that is in my reference links.

That's a U13 motor w/the 1E000 from what seems like '94. I'm not sure exactly if the '95 U13 had a 1E001 or a 1E000, but I've ran across posts on a Bluebird forum where members had '94 blacktops. According to Nissan FAST, in '95 the U13 came with the 1E001 which would make sense because that's also when the first W10 Avenirs were being made which shared the same turbo. So any blacktop w/the 1E000 would have been a U13 from '94.

Doesn't matter which way it's facing. It's not an Avenir and is a U13.

U13 had a front mount, just like a W10 so the outlet will face down. Only U12 had TMIC

I would pay more attention to turbo part numbers guys! THe motors themselves are all the same really, and that goes back to what B14-SErious said, check compression! If it is stead across all 4 and around 150 you are looking good, then check turbo part number! If both match, you are set.

Here is one for you my turbo ends in 79E00, which engine did this come from? As far as i could tell its a bluebird manifold it came on and it came with the pipe that goes over the exhaust manifold. It also has the least amount of shaft play i have ever felt on a t25.

From what I can gather, the 79E00 is a turbo off an early model U12.
