Hello... B13 with SR20DE swap

Hello to all forum members

My name is Miguel, from Colombia in south america. I own a B13 and recently swapped a SR20VE with a full standalone EFI and many extras (turbo).

The car is an absolute blast to drive, but being a car guy myself, im not really feeling the difference when VVL kicks in. Im not sure what to expect (compared to, like for example a B series VTEC engine). I know that the solenoids work as I can test them with my EFI and they click loudly, and the mechanism works as I have tried triggering it on my shop using compressed air, but with the car running, does not feel like anything happens.

I think I know what might be happening, but I need the help from experienced people on this boards. On my country, we never got the VE engine on any car, only the DE. Im almost positive that the guy I bough the engine from, fitted a DE headgasket. As far as I know, VE gaskets have an extra oil passage for the VVL solenoids and that passage is probably blocked by the DE headgasket. Does this makes sense? Is there any way to determine the differences between them?
