Aftermarket Ignition?

934 Views 20 Replies 8 Participants Last post by  [email protected]$t9d7
I was wondering if any of you B14 owners have an aftermarket ignition? I just got my MSD Digital 6 and Blaster SS coil but I can't get the damn car to run with it. I have the ignition hooked up correctly ( get spark out of the coil wire). I have modified my cap and I think it is done properly. So I am not getting any spark to the plugs but I am the distributor cap. Does anyone have any suggestion that will help me get this thing running?

Thanks

Since Harris won't do this anymore, I will:

Search! You'll find out why your combo won't work.
just for reference, i drilled the cap to insert the tower adapter, but didn't have to break the connection inside the cap. did you modify the distributor, in terms of breaking one of the internal connections and soldering the trigger wire (white) there? hopefully you broke the right one. also, make sure it's set to 0 (4 cyl). which instructions are you referring to?

I have searched for weeks and found very useful information, I even found the insturctions on JWT site useful, if you are running the internal coil. I know my setup will work because several other people are running it. It kinda pisses me off that you will just post "SEARCH!" without knowing what someone has done. I know Harris retired the search nazi title and I don't think you should be his self-appointed successor.

I didn't break the internal connection to run the external trigger wire because of a post that I SEARCHED through I saw that Jay Hass said you didn't have to run the external trigger wire if you are hooking up an external coil. I do have all the settings on the MSD set right and when I test for spark like the directions said, I get spark. Maybe my trigger wire isn't working then.
Did you run the external trigger wire like JWT instructions say to do? This seems to be the only difference between yours and mine, other then I broke the connection on the inside of the cap. I have no problem with buying another cap and leaving the internal connection alone and just installing the tower adapter.

Thanks

As if anyone voted Harris into the position...He learned everything he knows about Search Nazi from me. I welcomed the vacation while he fulfilled that duty. Since he's retired, well, SOMEONE has to do it.

Seems to me you didn't mention having searched. So, I assume you're like the other guys who move their lips/fingers without first engaging their brains.

I'm pretty much like TV news: only the bad stuff gets a mention.

Post count doesn't really mean much other than he posts a lot. I've seen seen some very experienced folks here unthinkingly throw out questions on subjects that have been beaten so far into the ground you get oil. I'm not going to assume they search unless they say so.
Bruce is an old man, I've met him at a couple of conventions.

He is old like George Roffe and stuff. They get cranky at the later time of the day.

I am not mad at anyone I was just fustrated that I can't get this ignition to work. I have spent the last couple weekends tring to figure it out. I think I may have found out what my problem was. I think I need to modify the distributor so it has an external trigger wire. I didn't think I would have to do this since I am using an external coil, but oh well.

iczer200sx - is this what you did?
I want to thanks all you guys for the advise. I finally got it running this weekend. I may try to do a right up and post it so it will be on the forum for future reference.
You had to run an external trigger. If i would have saw post earlier i could have told you that.

better late then never :D
TUNED200, Next time I see you on AIM I will tell you how to do it. I was pretty simple once I figured out everything I needed to modify.
Jackson Diamond, What was the purpose of running the tach adapter? My tach still works along with my cruise control. I was just curious to see why it is needed.
i got a check engine light with mine, code 21 (ignition circuit) so i bought the tach adapter even though my tach was still working. still have code 21, so pretty much useless on my car. no need.
