Chassis problem of some type...

I am having a bit of a problem underneath, and I cant figure out what it is. It sounds/feels like a wheel out of balance or an alignment problem, but it does it as slow as 5 mph. If I am sitting still I can jerk the wheel back and forth and hear a slight metal-to-metal contact. First thing I thought was a wheel bearing, but checked and thats not it. Then I was told a tierod end was out of whack, but that doesn't seem so. If the front end is raised and the car is running in gear, the left front wheel wobbles all over the place. I can't figure it out.

I am leaning towards it either being something internal in the tranny, or possibly the rack. Any suggestions?
Thanks, Josh

bad axle?
Does the front wheel move around if you shake the tire it when it is raised up?
Everything should feel tight, and there should be little slop.

If sloppy, it is likely tie rod or maybe wheel bearing (you should be able to see where the movement is occuring) or even lose lug nuts. You really need to grab ahold of the wheel and move it around and look for where the slop is occuring.

If everything feels tight, you might have a bent wheel or some other component is bent.

This is a wild (and weird, I know) guess, but I've seen it happen before. Have you checked the hub itself to make sure it's completely straight? I've seen one instance of a car where the wheel hub had been dented in for a reason which I cannot even imagine.

Well, I havent thought of that. I am going to hopefully find out Fri....Josh
i vote axle.....
On the axle thing, would it make a clanking noise if it were out? Also, would it cause that bad of a vibration at such low speeds? not that I am trying to shut down the ideas, which I appreciate, but just trying to narrow things down.
Thanks, Josh

Tie rod or tie rod end.
