I have had my car for about 2 months now and i have yet to fully appreciate it because i had to wait for my license. I have driven it alot on my permit but obviously its not the same. So today was supposed to be the BIG day for me to get my license. Well i didnt. (i know what your thinking , its better those punk kids dont get thier license anyways) Well let me explain.. ever since i had my permit i have driven well over 20k miles. Yes believe it. In these miles i had to choose between street racing or not. How fast is too fast and a slew of other things.. not to mention being a new driver presents its difficulties too. SO i have turned down racing the rice-a-roni civic that i know i could beet, i use my turn signal, i dont flip off the cell-phone-talking-tailgating soccer mom. And i have learned my highway manners. Ive driven on highways and done 90 in a 65 and now i have realised that is stupid! So when it was time to get my license i recalled from when i got my permit that the DMV looks for all the cheesy things that nobody does but you are so harshly graded on.. i also delt with my driver's ed teacher that explained to me that that disk brake of mine in the rear is not functional because only 4 wheel drive cars have brakes at 4 wheels. Also... The "best" way to stop a skid is too let off the accelerator and steer into the slide.. then steer the other way to prevent "oversteer"... I have never corrected a slide by letting completely off the accelerator. and i wont hold it against them for the misuse of "oversteer". so i grin and bear the idiocracy and learn it anyways.. so did you guys know that you can lose your license for driving 15mph over the posted limit when the limit is over 55? Well its true but ive never heard of it enforced. Also you can lose your vehicle if caught street racing. So i figured that i should be in ok shape when i take my driving test. So when i did my 3 point turn apparently i didnt turn my turn signal on early enough! Also, when i changed lanes i did not look over my shoulder long enought to neglect any traffic that is panic braking in front of me so i could change lanes. Ok so the guy didnt tell me that i didnt look long enough to rear end someone but he did tell me that i should at least recognize the color of any vehicles in my blind spot... So you can understand that i would be quite upset when i left.. i did a bad thing and i do regret it now... To express my grattitude for thier utter concern for my motroing safety, as i was pulling out i did a Rev-Limiter-bangin-Gran-Turismo-style launch on the way out.. needles to say there was smoke. What gives? Did i mention that when i got to the DMV 10 min before it opened there was a line 30ft long at the door!!!! And i had to wait an hour and a half before i am told i failed! And these people regulate safe drivers?

EDIT: Sorry to make such a long post but its really on my mind. Im thinking of doing a thorough check of my vehicle next time i take the test to be sure that the tester and i are safe... ill do it something like in autocross.. check my tire pressures, check the steering rack, remove the center caps and spare tire and jack, check all the fluid levels and roll down the windows so i wont breathe any noxious fumes that my stout exhaust system may be letting out. Maybe ill ask him to do those things for me and grade him on it!

Do you live in Georgia?

I had a similar experience when I tried to get my license way back in '89 when I lived in Atlanta. I was 17 and when I had my learner's permit, I had helped drive from Omaha, Neb., to Minnesota, and also from Omaha to Atlanta. No accidents, incidents or anything. Driven around town for a couple years, too.

So I thought I was going to actually get a driving test. Instead got tested on how well I could drive to an empty parking lot behind the DMV and parallel park and coast at idle speed through a slalom.

I failed the first time because I missed a stop sign at the entrance of the parking lot. Failed the next time because I didn't parallel park "good enough" and grazed a cone at the end of the slalom. Both times, the tester was a big fat bitch who had the personality of a big fat bitch.

The next time I went, my mom requested a different tester. This time, I parked just as well as before and again grazed a cone in the slalom. But the tester said she could tell I was nervous, and she passed me.

I wish I could go back now and take that test with that fat bitch.
Riding with me through the slalom would give her nightmares for years!

The driver licensing system in this country is all wrong. No need to cite examples. What's worse is that most people think raising the minimum age for driving will create a more competent motoring public. Driver training at an early age combined with relevant testing is the way to go.

I took my driving test at age 14 (a simple drive around the block) and was automatically given full driving privileges by the state of Arkansas on my 16th birthday. A no-nonsense setup, but a wholly inadequate judgement of driving ability.

you have to take drivers training in TX. I took mine in high school for one semester. a kid ran off the road into a ditch b/c we were tickling him (this kid was a total dork), but that was the only mishap that we had.

I had a a little trouble when I got mine here in Winston Salem NC. I stopped @ a yield sign for a little extra safety. The lady wasn't going to pass me but she said I was very cautious.
Also MadMoney, have you ever heard of Hal Ballock. He lived in Boone also and had a mean Sentra SE-R. I almost bought the car from him. He had almost ever mod on and it was the same car that won him 1st. in Dsp State title. He was a Boone policeman and was around 40yrs. old. Cool Cop huh!
