Front Mounting BB Top Mount??

1553 Views 27 Replies 9 Participants Last post by  ringgold
Alright I think that I have finally decided that I want to front mount my top mount intercooler on my BB DET. I want it to be really clean so exactly what size mandrel piping do I need? 2" is that good enough also what bends do I need to get like 4 180* u bends or what? I want it to be hardly noticeable from up front also so Im gonna paint it black probably. I felt a difference finally the other night after driving my car for a little while I could tell it lost a little power from Im sure the top mount getting hot. I want to also get as many of the pipes welded as I can so I dont have a problem with the piping having leaks or blowing apart under boost. So what do I need to get to get this project under way?

also serban and greg should be able to help you out seeing how they did this exact thing..
Front mounting the BB intercooler on a Classic won't really be Stealth, If thats what you were going for. The ones I have seen had the I/C hanging below the front lip.
I managed to front mount my BB intercooler without having any of the piping showing at all. This was with a 93-94 bumper though which hangs a little lower. Serbans write up is a great place to start. You should be able to get an idea of what to order from that link.
there has got to be a way to do it with no piping hanging out the frount bumper! I dont want that myself like I said I want a nice clean little setup.

Still way over my spending limit. That is why I want to front mount my top mount
What size piping should I buy? 2" or bigger? I see in that DIY that Serban put on the www.floridasr20s.com website that he did his intercooler piping with what seems to be 4 180 degree mandrel bends. Where is the best place to get these and what size do I need?
t25 , 2 inch all the way is fine, or if u want , 2 inch hot side, 2.5 inch cold side, check out greg perry's site was well www.turbochargedser.com , he front mounted his BB tmic for a bit and it has a write up there
oh, and you dont need 4 180 bends, u need like 2 180 bends or 4 90 bends at most i think, i used 4-5 at most. www.jcwhitney.com

BTW, i'm selling a mandrel bent 2 inch IC piping for FMIC with intake pipe mandrel bent as well :)

So where is the best place to get these mandrel bends and what kind of piping is the best? It seems that all I need is a just 4 180 degree bends but I want to make sure that I get the right thing so how long does the straight parts on the bends need to be so I will have enough piping.

read the post above ;)
I must have been posting the same time you were during that sorry! So you have some madrel front mount intercooler piping that is read to pretty much bolt in for sale? Im interested

I still need to know what bends to get as in I know that I need 2"-2.5" in diameter but you can get different 180 or 90 degree bends. Their lengths are different and there bends I guess can be tighter which ones did you go with?
Ok, lets bring back some pictures from the dead :)

Materials used.

Modifying the existing BB pipe

Hot side piping.

Yes, thats right, PVC.

Cold side piping.

With the bumper back on.

Lets put the foglights back on too.

Ok, so its not the most professional job, but $54 from Home Depot for all the materials. You can't go wrong.

Good pics and they help out but I dont want to use pvc and rubber elbows. I want to use and get welded together as many metal mandrels that I can. I want it to look good!! Not saying that the way Serban did it looks bad or will not work. I just like the way he did it with his new intercooler setup better. It just looks better in my opinion and Im sure that you dont have to worry about as many boost leaks when you dont have to use as many rubber elbows?

So which mandrel bends should I get? Im gonna go with 2" inner diameter but what are the other deminsions? The lenghts and bend radius? They have several different on www.jcwhitney.com
I only did that for a quick/cheap fmic setup. Once I got the bigger IC, I got mandrel bends and did it right, but I didnt see a need to pay a lot to make it nice when the BB ic was temporary. :)

also if you want it to look really, really nice you can sand or grind dont the seams and get it powder coated..
