FYI-Dead ECU

I have searched this site many times, but I have never seen anything about the symptoms of a dead ECU. I recently found out, while reading one of the articles in NPM, about the "fans of death". It was fortunate I did read that, since I had never heard of anything like that before.

My car had been showing some symptoms of a vacuum leak/misfire with blinking CEL problem since I got it. I was searching this site and SE-R.net for some help, but every fix came up short. Luckily, I stumbled across the article in NPM last month, which stated that if the radiator fans run all the time, the ECU is shot. Hence the "fans of death". I knew my fans ran all the time, but didn't know what it meant. I couldn't get into timing mode, and my car was running pig rich with a CEL that would blink like some kind of messed up morris code but throw no codes (always code 55, all clear).

Well, I got a working ECU thanks to Fred and threw it in today. It's like driving a new car! I was lucky to find that small tidbit of info, otherwise I would still be tearing out my hair in frustration.

So, a word to the wise, if you have any of the above problems, check it out.

P.S. if anybody knew about this before, you should have documented it! Shame on you! ;)

your computer is not dead. you problem is your head temp sensor. change the head temp sensor. if the circuit in the computer that controls the fans was bad, then the fans wouldnt turn on at all. if the head temp is bad the fans will be running all the time. the car stumbles and idles bad because the computer is put into limp mode because of the head temp sensor being bad. it is the way that the computer tries to save the motor when something goes wrong. it will turn on the fans to run all the time, it will dump more feul to make up for a lean condition, and will pull back timing electronicaly to reduce knocking or pinging in the motor. truely nissan computers rarely go bad, unless they are supplied the wrong voltage or handled improperly. if i were you i would try gettting a new head temp sensor instead of a computer. computers are getting hard to find these days.

I thought this as well. The car stayed in closed loop, for certain. I thought it was the coolant temp sensor at first, but replacing it did nothing.

With the new(er) ECU in, the fans don't run all the time, and the car will go into open loop when warm. The old ECU looked really beat up, with several good size dents on the top of it. I didn't notice them until I removed the entire unit to switch over the bracket.
I did a conversion old school ad wagon place a sr20 howeve. I have some issues getting it to start. I have to be turning it over for a while before it start when it does, and I take it for a test drive the power keep cutting out and coming in. I have to rev it up but constantly keep cutting out.
