Ask the sanctioning body that's running the lapping day. Some require a SA-rated racing helmet, while others only ask you to bring a M-rated motorcycle helmet.

If you plan on using a helmet very much, go ahead and spring for a SA2000 model. They're usually lighter (less sore necks), and you'll be ready for any sort of performance driving.

Edit - a few racer outlets (of many):

This is really something NOT to cut corners on. Get a good SA rated helmet. I use a Bell M2. SA rating, full face (not an Earnhardt open face type), and a large enough eye-port to fit my Ray Bans. Less then $300 from Racer Wholesale.

Excellent point. I use an M2 as well. Never cut corners regarding safety. Spend the extra bucks and get yourself a good full face SA rated helmet.

if this is your first time maybe you can get a loaner.... listen to these guys...

i bought a cheap ass g-force helmet and used it 3 times and the thing is really cheaply made not to mention really heavy. it was 120 bucks and at the time i really couldnt afford anything better. if your just going once see if you can borrow someone's locally if the track doesnt hand them out. if you know its time to buy one... take it from me dont skimp. im going to be buying exactly what these guys have as soon as i can. maybe i can donate the old one to the loaner cause. i should have listened to them when i bought mine.

Or, if you go the motorcycle route, Shoei makes very high quality helmets. They're lightweight, too.

I swear by Shoei helmets for one reason: In 1999, my head hit the pavement at 38mph after being highsided. The helmet did its job. Barely a scuff on the helmet, really.

Thanks for all of the help guys. I'm gonna see if anyone I know has a loaner that I can use until I can get the cash for a good one. I'd rather not go the "el cheapo" route.
