My sister has a '92 SE and I have a '94 se-r,
she has 156,000 and I have 126,000.
SHE HAS HAD NO PROBS WHATSOEVER!!
I just bought my se-r and im having the common idle problems. im going to try and fix it this weekend. I am kind of upset about it but im hoping its an easy fix.
I used to be a Honda-man and never experienced anything like this. I used to have an 85, 86, AND 91 CRX Si. All with over 150k miles and never experienced any probs.
I made the switch to nissan cause I needed a back seat and I sure didnt want a civic.(too many around here). So I sold the rex's .Now I own a nissan and I am on this new forum ( which I love, just as good as the honda forum), and hopefully in a month my se-r will be kicking some crx butt. I miss them terribly though.
So other than the idle problem, im doing just fine.

There are several problems.

1. 5th gear pop out (typically on the 91-92 SE-R's)

2. Sagging door syndrome. The doors are too heavy for the hinges and tend to fail.

3. Fuel pump recall. Most have been replaced though.

4. EGR/AIV emissions problems. These tend to cause idle problems and can just make the car run overall crappy. Make sure they are working properly.

I WOULD SAY THEY ARE RELIABLE.

JUST CHECK FOR THAT IDLE STUFF
AND THE 5TH GEAR POP OUT.

I love my classic. I have only had since November and I have had to do the typical used car fix ups for it --New spark plugs, plug wires, rotor, distributor cap. Then there are certain things that the classics do that you might have to fix. Leaking Valve cover gasket (easy), leaking tranny switches (easy), starter squeal (ignoring it until actually have to get new starter), and 5th gear popout ( not so good.) I have had to deal with all of these except 5th gear popout. This my track car/daily driver and it hasn't let me down yet. I enjoy driving the car everyday and I know it is going to get to work and back from a day at the track. Just find a classic that hasn't been raced and treated nice. You'll be all set.

'94 SE-R, 174,000 miles:

1. Original Clutch

2. Original Exhaust System (100%)

3. Original Brake Rotors

4. No 5th gear popout

5. Only problem- bad alternator required replacement and new battery (at 170,000 miles).

5. Engine sees at least 6,500 rpm every day.

Yep, I guess you could say they're reliable.

I've had my classic for 90,000 miles and it has been a joy every single foot of its 475,200,000 feet of personal movement. And none of those feet were pushed or pulled. ALL DRIVEN BABY! WOOO HOOO!!!

The car itself is 115,000 miles old and my "Nissan Specialist" says that the car is in amazing condition.

Not to mention that these motors are actually bulletproof compared to honda b-series motors (Mike K said so). They are really dependable when modding too. I suggest that once you purchase the se-r, have someone go through the car's motor and suspension thoroughly and see any possible weak points. The car is a "classic" so this would only be good insurance that you get a great running car.
GOOD LUCK!

Thanks everyone...Only one thing. The one I am looking at...when he starts it and hits the gas for the fisr couple seconf it sounds like there is a loose belt but it goes away instantly and it is not when he is actually starting the car, but after.

Honda Civic with a 240sx front-end conversion. Either that, or I'm really blind!

to SHEABIRD, well, thats a common problem among these cars. It is b/c of the starter, called "starter squeal", or possibly a loose belt. if you check the ser.net archives, theres probably volumes of info on it. It doesnt pose as a major problem though, just an annoyance.

Thanks, the only thing is, it happens after it is started, not when it is cranking and when he hits the gas it sounds like a loose belt(timinig I thought)but there is no timing belt. Then after a few seconds of running it stops... ???

Well mine just turned 150k last weekend. So far nothing has broke on me *knock on wood*. Under stock conditions and moderate driving (no wild shifting) they should last 200+k. Typical things like axles yea wear out, starter squeel(mine has done it for 2 years now), valve cover gasket leaking, 5th gear pop out(never had that problem
), and regular wear items. Most things aren't problems to classics but like to general cars. There isn't anyone thing other than maybe fuel pump or 5th pop out that singles them out.

I thrash my classic on a regular basis. I autocross and track drive it ~25 weekends/year. In the ~2 years I've had it, I finally had my first failure this weekend: A blown caliper seal.

It's a part that costs ~ $.25, but I had to have it trailered back to my house for repairs.

But back to your concerns. Other than 5th gear pop-out (which will be obvious when you drive it) there nothing expensive that often goes wrong on these cars. The emmissions/rough running is annoying, but certainly not terminal and easy to fix.

Yeah that squeal is probably just a worn belt. No biggie. Just replace the belt.

Hmmm...It would appear that I'm the only one that doesn't like their Classic-I think the ****in' things cursed!! I installed a CAI on it, hoping to add some power, and now the freakin' emission systems **** the bed(rotten eggs, anyone?). Then, to add insult to injury, my trunk broke(the wires that hold up the trunk lid broke)and landed on a friend of mine, who was promptly knocked unconscious trying to retrieve some beer from the trunk. I had to prop the stupid thing up so it won't fall. I can't wait to get rid of this thing-the sooner the better. I will hopefully will have it traded in by the end of the week. Goodbye headache!! I suppose if you had a car that was in good condition(and yes, a VERY reputable mechanic checked it out-all the stuff that has broken has happened since Dec.) it would be a good deal, but would I recommend this car to someone else? I doubt it
